What is the difference between the OpManager Distributed Edition and other editions of OpManager?

The Distributed Edition is a scalable, distributed version of OpManager suitable for large enterprises needing to monitor thousands of devices. The Distributed Edition consists of a central server and remote probes which work together to monitor tens of thousands of interfaces or switch ports. All probes communicate to the central server via secured HTTPS connection and exchange information regularly.

The other Editions of OpManager are single server installations suitable for small and medium enterprises not having more than thousand devices to monitor.

Distributed Edition lacks a few features that are already available in Professional Edition, viz. Cisco IP SLA based WAN RTT Monitoring, VoIP Monitoring and Customizable Dashboard. These features will be available soon in the subsequent releases.

What is the difference between the OpManager Distributed Edition and MSPCenterPlus?

MSPCenterPlus is suitable for Managed Service Providers who will find useful the Remote Management, HelpDesk & Service Automation modules present in MSPCenterPlus. The OpManager Distributed Edition is built for large enterprises needing scalable, enterprise-wide network monitoring. A loose integration with the popular helpdesk software ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus is possible with the OpManager Distributed Edition. Both MSPCenterPlus and OpManager Distributed Edition have a probe-central architecture.

How is OpManager Distributed Edition licensed?

The Distributed Edition is licensed based on the number of devices to be monitored. One can install many numbers of probes but a license limits the central server to monitoring the licensed number of devices.

What is the maximum number of devices I can monitor with the OpManager Distributed Edition?

While the licensing is based on the number of devices, scalability depends on the number of interfaces that are monitored by the software. It is found that with optimal system configurations and performance tuning parameters, the Distributed Edition central server can scale to monitor upto 50,000 interfaces or switch ports.

Can I upgrade from other OpManager Editions to the OpManager Distributed Edition?

Is there a limitation to the number of probes I can have with my license?

No, there is no limit to the number of probes one can have deployed. The central server would only limit monitoring to the number of devices as stated in the license purchased.

Can I separate the central server’s Database to run on a different machine?

Both the central server's as well as the remote probe's database can be distributed to separate servers.
