What's New In Release 4.2.0

Enhanced rogue detection techniques

WiFi Manager now enables IT Teams to pre-configure the 'Authorized Wireless Devices List' for enhanced rogue detection capabilities. Basically, this is to tell WiFi Manager about your authorized devices. Following are the different ways to tell WiFi Manager about your authorized wireless devices.

  • Vendor: Input the vendor(s) name of the wireless devices that your company uses. Ex: Cisco, 3Com etc.
  • SSID: Input the SSID(s) that your company uses Ex:MyCompanyWLAN1, MyCompanyWLAN2
  • MAC Address: Input MAC addresses of your authorized wireless devices.
  • Radio Media Type: Input the radio media type that is authorized in your company. Ex: 802.11b/g or 802.11a
  • Channel: Input the channel at which your access points are configured to operate in.

WiFi Manager will generate 'rogue' alarms when it sees any device that doesn't match with any of the above conditions.

Rogue blocking made easy

WiFi Manager now provides a 'retrace' option for you to 'retrace' the switch port to which the Access Point is connected. Once the switch port is identified, you can then click on the 'block' link to block the access point from the network. WiFi Manager internally blocks the ethernet traffic at the switch port and thereby makes the access point useless. This technique is called switch port blocking and is more effective than the disassociation storm attack used by IDS systems to block rogue access points. For more details refer to the whitepaper 'Rogue Detection and Blocking'.

Full page description for security alarms

WiFi Manager now provides a full page description for security alarms such as the denial-of-service alarms, vulnerability alarms, and the rogue detection alarms. The description is aimed at providing the background information of these problems to the IT administrators and keep them informed about the ill-effects of each threat. Follow the links below to see some of the full page descriptions.

Support for Nomadix Gateway

WiFi Manager now supports wireless access gateways from Nomadix. The details of the model supported are:

  • Model: AG 2000 W
  • Firmware: 1.3.2.11
  • Monitoring Capabilities: Fault monitoring, Availability Monitoring, Health Monitoring
  • Configuration/ Firmware Upgrade: In future releases.

Option to unmanage devices during off-office hours

WiFi Manager now enables operators to configure office hours into the system so that it stops monitoring. This avoids false alarms that get generated when the network is under maintenance. This also saves bandwidth that is consumed by WiFi Manager in monitoring the devices at times when they need not be monitored.

Option to disable status polling/ data collection for devices

WiFi Manager now enables operators to stop status polling and/or data collection for specific devices or device categories. For example, if the operator wants only status polling and not data collection for all of his desktops, then he can do so using this option. This saves the bandwidth that would have been used by WiFi Manager in performing these operations.

HTTP support for device discovery

WiFi Manager now supports HTTP protocol for discovering wireless access points. This helps in properly identifying access points that don't support other known protocols such as SNMP, Telnet, or CDP (specific to Cisco devices).

Business views

Business Views is a tool to create network visualization maps. If an organization has got WLANs operating out of multiple branch offices, the business views tool can help creating maps for each branch office depicting the floor plans and exact AP positions in the UI. These maps can be made hierarchical so that clicking on the icon for a branch office, say San Jose, opens up the San Jose map displaying the access point installed there. Further, it would depict the status of each access point giving the status of the entire WLAN in on UI along with the provision to drill down the details of the access point in a single click.

On-the-fly PDF generation for reports

Now it has become a lot more easier to print the WiFi Manager reports. Click on the small PDF icon available on the report screen to convert the report of your choice to a PDF, instantly. PDFs thus created will be available under C:/ProgramFiles/AdventNet/ME/WiFi Manager/html/pdfgeneration/pdf/ directory.

E-Mail Reports

Want to send a WiFi Manager report to someone instantly? Just click on the Mail icon on the report screen, fill in the 'To' address and click send. WiFi Manager creates a PDF of the report that you are viewing, and sends it as an Email attachment to the intended recipient.

AP-Client Association Report Enhancements

A total of four association reports have been revamped to give a much simpler and quick information about who's connected, to which AP, what's the association history, how long was the client connected etc. Here is a one liner on what each report can give

  • Association Report By Mobile Client: Gives the list of connected mobile clients for a given period of time.
  • Association Report By Access Point: Gives the list of mobile clients Vs access points
  • Live Associations: Gives the live wireless connections at this point of time.
  • Association Report By Session Duration: Gives the number of wireless sessions for a given period of time.

Bandwidth Graphs Enhancements

Bandwidth graphs now show the volume, speed, and utilization percentage in tabbed panes. Gives the flexibility to switch panes and see the information without having to navigate through multiple reports.

Other UI enhancements

  • Reports have been reorganized for easy access.
