The cost of a litigation hold
In cases where an organization learns of litigation or is anticipating litigation, it's required by law to ensure all relevant content is preserved and brought forward if needed. Using Litigation hold in Office 365, administrators can prevent users from deleting items relating to pending or imminent litigation from Exchange Online mailboxes. Litigation hold enables administrators to retain entire mailboxes or just parts of it, ensuring users cannot permanently delete content from those mailboxes.
While litigation hold is useful, there are a couple of financial aspects to consider when you depend on it to comply with regulations.
- Litigation holds cannot be undone, causing the size of the mailbox to keep increasing as that data is never deleted. If the mailbox size exceeds the licensed limit, you’ll have to obtain additional storage for mailboxes.
- The litigation hold feature is only available in the Office 365 Enterprise E3 plan or higher, or the Exchange Online Plan 2.
With a backup solution like RecoveryManager Plus, you can eliminate the need for additional storage or more costly Office 365 plans. RecoveryManager Plus’ flexible retention policies enable you to store email data for as long as you need it.
