Patch Installation Failure Fatal Error
Problem
A Patch Management deployment fails with Fatal Error during installation.
Cause
This error can occur when:
- the application is running during installation, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge running in the foreground or background;
- Windows Installer requires the original installation source to update or remove an older MSI installation; or
- the failure is specific to the patch or installer.
Resolution
Before choosing a remedy, record the exact patch, application version, installer result and failure time. Preserve vendor setup or verbose MSI logs for MSI-based updates. Use the unknown installer result checks if the reported fatal error does not identify a cause.
On Windows, match the Patch ID, task, execution time, status and full remark in logs\dcpatchinstallaccess.log under the agent installation folder. This execution record does not replace a verbose MSI log.
- If a running application caused the failure, redeploy only during computer startup. Avoid the combined startup-or-refresh-cycle option if the application can run during refresh cycles.
- If Windows Installer requests the original package, obtain the exact version and package type it identifies. Make that source available, remove the obsolete installation, run a patch scan, then redeploy the current patch.
- If the failure persists, reproduce it manually and collect the screenshot and agent logs. Include vendor setup or verbose MSI logs produced by that attempt; their location depends on the installer command and switches. Include
%windows%\KB******.logonly if the update produces it. Select logs by installer type, not the Microsoft vendor name alone.
For a fatal error from a Software Deployment package rather than a patch, use the Software Deployment troubleshooting guidance instead of this Patch Management article.
