Troubleshooting- A fatal error occurred during installation

Problem

During image creation, a fatal error might occur due to various reasons. Let us discuss the causes responsible for this error.

Cause

  1. The folder on which you are trying to install to the image creator component is encrypted.
  2. There is not enough storage space in the disk.
  3. System permissions are disabled for the folder.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow the steps given below for each of the respective causes:

The folder on which you are trying to install to the image creator component is encrypted.

  1. Right-click Program Files (x86) folder under C drive and select properties.
  2. Under Attributes section, select Advanced.
  3. Under Compress or Encrypt attributes, check if the Encrypt contents to secure data is checked.
  4. If yes, uncheck the box to allow the MSI file to be installed in the folder.

There is not enough storage space in the disk

  1. Select Run from the Start menu and run the command cleanmgr.
  2. Under Disk Cleanup, select C drive and click OK.
  3. You will be shown the amount of space that can be freed up. Click OK to clean your disk up.

System permissions are disabled for the folder

  1. Right-click Program Files (x86) folder under C drive and select properties.
  2. Under Security, check if SYSTEM is present under Group or User names.
  3. If SYSTEM is not present:
    • Click Edit-> Add.
    • Under Enter the object names to select, type in SYSTEM and press enter.
  4. If SYSTEM is present, click SYSTEM to view its permissions in the section below.
  5. Ensure that Full Control is allowed. If not:
    • Click Edit and in the permissions box and click SYSTEM.
    • Check the Allow box for Full Control.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.
