Objective

This article helps IT administrators efficiently retrieve BitLocker recovery keys for computers within the Microsoft Entra ID environment using RecoveryManager Plus.

BitLocker recovery keys are used by IT administrators to quickly recover access to encrypted drives when the operating system is unable to boot or the user has forgotten their password. In enterprise environments where BitLocker encryption is mandated for data security, quick access to these recovery keys ensures minimal downtime and uninterrupted productivity.

RecoveryManager Plus backs up Entra ID device objects (including BitLocker key data) and lets administrators search and view those keys from backups.

Prerequisites

Before you can retrieve BitLocker recovery keys using RecoveryManager Plus, ensure that you have at least one valid backup of the computer object containing the BitLocker recovery keys.

Steps to retrieve Entra ID BitLocker recovery keys

The following steps illustrate how you can retrieve BitLocker recovery keys in Entra ID using RecoveryManager Plus.

1. Log in to RecoveryManager Plus as an administrator.
2. Navigate to the Entra ID tab > Entra Objects > Quick Recovery > BitLocker Recovery Keys.
3. From the BitLocker Recovery Key drop-down menu, select either Filter By BitLocker ID to search using the BitLocker ID or Filter By Computer Name to search using the computer name.
4. Click Search to display the keys.
5. In the table below, locate the desired computer and click Show under the Recovery Key column to access the key.
