# Phone number is not detected

## Problem

You are unable to view the phone number of a device from the MDM server and see the error message **Phone number is not detected**.

## Cause

You will get the error message **Phone number is not detected** due to the following reasons:

2. [Phone number status in the device is 'Unknown'](https://www.manageengine.com/mobile-device-management/kb/mdm-phone-number-not-detected.html#phone-number-status-is-unknown)

## Resolution

Verify the following details to resolve the **Phone number is not detected** issue:

### No SIM card is installed in device

Ensure that there is a valid SIM card installed on the device. Also, ensure it's not an iPad without a SIM card.

### Phone number status in the device is 'Unknown'

In case the phone number status is *Unknown* on Android or iOS devices, MDM cannot fetch and display the phone number on the server. Follow the steps mentioned below to verify if the phone number is available on the device.

#### For Android devices

Navigate to **Settings -> About Phone -> Status** on your Android device. Ensure that the status displayed is not *Unknown*, and your phone number is visible there. Else, MDM cannot fetch the phone number on the device.

**NOTE:** In some cases, MDM cannot fetch the phone number if the phone number is not written internally in SIM card. This is dependent on the SIM manufacturers.

#### For iOS devices

To resolve the Phone number is not detected issue on iOS devices, verify whether the phone number is available on the device by following the steps given below:

- Navigate to **Settings -> General -> Phone -> My number** on your iOS device. Ensure that the status displayed is not *Unknown*, and your phone number is visible there. Else, MDM cannot fetch the phone number on the device.
- Alternatively, connect the iOS device to iTunes and check the device information displayed. If the Mobile Data Number is displayed as *Unknown*, MDM cannot fetch the phone number in the device.
- Also turn on iMessage on the device by navigating to **Settings -> General -> Messages -> iMessage** if the phone number is not detected.
