Booting computers using ISO Media

ManageEngine OS Deployer allows administrators to boot computers into a deployment environment using ISO media. This document explains how to download the ISO bootable media from the console and use it to boot target computers through USB drives, CD/DVDs, or virtual machines.

Download the ISO bootable media

The ISO media must be downloaded from the OS Deployer console before it can be used to boot computers. Follow the steps below:

  1. In the web console, navigate to Deploy > Create Bootable Media under the Deploy Image section.
  2. Select the desired ISO media and click the Action icon.
  3. Under the Actions tab, click Download Media.

Once downloaded, the ISO file can be used to create bootable USB or CD/DVD drives, or directly attached to virtual machines.

Boot computers using ISO media

The downloaded ISO can be used to boot target machines in three different ways depending on your setup: USB drive, CD/DVD drive, or virtual machine.

Boot from USB drive

If you want a portable option to boot multiple devices, create a bootable USB from the ISO media. OS Deployer does not directly create USB bootable devices, so a third-party tool is required.

Follow these steps:

  1. Download a third-party tool such as Rufus, UltraISO, or YUMI.
  2. Launch the tool and add the downloaded ISO image file.
  3. Insert a USB drive to burn the ISO file (note that the drive may be formatted).
  4. Once the ISO files are copied, insert the USB drive into the target computer and boot from USB.

Boot from CD/DVD drive

If you prefer optical media, you can burn the ISO file to a CD or DVD using tools such as UltraISO or PowerISO.

  1. Download and open a third-party tool such as UltraISO or PowerISO.
  2. Add the ISO image file into the tool.
  3. Insert a blank CD/DVD and burn the ISO file.
  4. Right-click the ISO file and select Mount to CD/DVD (if applicable).
  5. Insert the CD/DVD into the target computer to boot from the ISO media.

Boot virtual machines using ISO file

To boot a virtual machine directly using the ISO file:

  1. Open the virtual machine settings and locate the Image File or CD/DVD configuration section.
  2. Specify the location of the ISO file in the Image File text box.
  3. Copy the ISO file to the local folder of the virtual machine’s server.
  4. In the BIOS or boot settings, enable the Boot from CD option.
  5. The ISO file will now be used to boot the virtual machine.
