This document addresses the specific challenges associated with the handling of Windows Portable Devices by Device Control Plus.
Device Control Plus controls unauthorized device access for 18 types of devices, restricting file transfers from and to the peripheral devices. Despite an active block policy for a mobile device in place, the transfer/access data happened via the said device.
Windows Portable Devices is one of the 18 device types supported by Device Control Plus. However, the mobile device was identified to be accessing the system via an application that imitated the device type as a different one.
With such applications, the mobile device was not identifiable as a Windows Portable Device type, instead mimicking an unidentified device type. As the supported device types are defined, these types of circumstances where a device type posing as a different one does not fall under the purview of Device Control Plus.
As the nature of this application intervenes with the core functionalities in identifying the device types, the device control policy was unable to restrict a device type outside the scope of the product.
While Device Control Plus-related policy changes are handled and configured by Sysadmins and Technicians, it is highly recommended that the usage of such applications, for instance, Android Debug Bridge (ADB), be monitored by Sysadmins.
