A brief look at configuring minimum session security for NTLM SSP based server
Written by Titus Manohar, IT security team, ManageEngine • Updated on May 2026
This policy setting allows you to configure a client device to require the negotiation of 128-bit encryption or NTLMv2 session security. These values are dependent on the Network security: LAN Manager authentication level policy setting value. The policy setting can be configured to 'Require 128-bit encryption'. In this case the connection fails if strong encryption (128-bit) is not negotiated. The policy can also be configured to 'Require NTLMv2 session security' in which case the connection fails if the NTLMv2 protocol is not negotiated.
You can find this policy at Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options
Security concerns and remediation:
Network traffic that depends on NTLM Security Support Provider (NTLM SSP) could face vulnerabilities like exposure to an attacker who has penetrated the network and can lead to man-in-the-middle attacks.
Configuring all these values for this policy setting will help protect network traffic that uses the NTLM SSP from being accessed by a hacker who has entered the same network. Older client devices that do not support these security settings cannot communicate with the computers which have this policy.
