Monitoring Network Speed

Network speed monitor - why does your organization need one?

A network speed monitor is a tool that monitors and/or analyzes your internet speed, keeps an eye on the incoming and outgoing traffic, and helps you prevent network strain. This valuable resource can range from a simple internet speed monitor that tracks your internet speed in real time, to a full-fledged bandwidth monitor that tracks all metrics that indicate the smooth functioning of your organization's network.

Whether you are a small business or a large enterprise, monitoring network speed is a critical part of your network performance and health. Your network speed is a dynamic factor, and your network speed requirements constantly vary between situations, such as an increase in the number of employees or upgrades in technology to accommodate changing business needs. Network speed monitoring software, in addition to a bandwidth monitor, is crucial for proactively monitoring network speed and vital for an organization's success.

Bandwidth vs. speed

The need for high bandwidth is at an all-time high and more complicated now with networks including standard on-premises, as well as public, private, and hybrid environments.

While bandwidth and internet speed are often used interchangeably, they are not always the same. Internet speed is more about latency than it is about the capacity of your network. The number your ISPs provides, say 3 Mbps, represents your bandwidth and not your internet speed. It can be confusing that a declared 3Mbps connection is actually no faster than 1Mbps.

Consider three trains traveling concurrently on three different tracks, and a second scenario where there are three trains traveling one behind the other on the same track. In these examples, the train represents your data, and the tracks represent your bandwidth. The speed of each train in both the scenarios is the same, but the first scenario is considered a faster and better option as all the trains reach the destination at the same time.

While a 1 Mbps connection might technically be as fast as a 3 Mbps connection, it just means that you can transfer three times the data simultaneously with a bandwidth of 3Mbps. In a real-world scenario, if you multiply this by a few tens, hundreds, or thousands of actions each day, you can see why this is an important component for businesses.

The need for speed: Why is network speed monitoring important?

Having a faster network connection is vital and a growing need for businesses. There are multiple factors that depend on network speed.

Communication: Communication is an integral part of any business or organization. With more and more people working remotely, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls and video conferences have become a necessity. Be it a team meeting, a webinar, or an appointment with a client, good network speed and capacity is crucial for quality communications that are important to your organization's credibility and productivity.

Security: A faster connection plays an important role in network security. It enables you to monitor your network in real time, and helps with surveillance and identifying any issues that might affect your end users.

Productivity and cost: Good network speed can save you a lot of time and increase efficiency and productivity. Working on a good network that doesn't crash due to lack of speed, capacity, or security will also help your organization save a lot of money.
