Building a Playbook

Overview

Playbooks are automated workflows that enable threat response and define how Log360 Cloud responds to security events, performs enrichment tasks, or executes corrective actions. They eliminate manual intervention by chaining predefined actions, decision points, and business logic into a sequential or conditional flow.

Log360 Cloud uses QNTRL Circuit as the execution engine for playbooks. QNTRL Circuit provides the visual designer, state management, and orchestration layer required to build scalable playbooks without having to write code. Each action in a playbook is represented as a configurable state, allowing users to visually construct logic flows that interact with other in-product modules and third-party integrations.

A playbook contains:

  • Defined Start and End states
  • One or more states representing operations
  • Execution paths that determine how logic flows between states
  • Once saved, playbooks can be mapped to alert profiles for automated execution or invoked manually from alerts and incidents based on context.

Please note that the playbook capability in Log360 Cloud is available only for Trial and Professional plans. If you are using a different plan, upgrade your subscription to access this feature.

Understanding the editor layout

Canvas A grid-based workspace used to design the playbook. All states, transitions, and execution paths are placed here. The canvas supports drag-and-drop state placement, zoom controls, and panning.

Start and End states Every playbook begins at Start and terminates at End. Additional end states can be created using Success and Failure nodes when conditional termination is required.

Category selector (Right panel) This panel displays available state categories based on your selection. Each category provides a set of prebuilt states:

Category Purpose
Flow Control Controls the direction and manner of execution (branching, waiting, success/failure handling, parallel execution).
Functional Defines operational tasks including functions (Deluge and Python) and playbooks (also supports playbook inside another playbook.)
Logs360Cloud Provides platform-specific actions to interact with Log360 Cloud modules such as alert management, incident management, log source management, service management, and endpoint actions such as execute script, restart machine, stop process, etc.

Only categories applicable to the selected state are shown.

Toolbar Located at the bottom of the canvas. Includes:

  • Auto Arrange
  • Change View
  • Validate Graph
  • Reset Changes
  • Zoom in/Zoom out

No playbook logic is stored until Save is executed.

Playbook structure and components

A playbook comprises three types of states:

1. Entry state

  • The predefined Start node
  • Cannot be deleted
  • No configuration required

2. Operational states

The core building blocks of the playbook. Each operational state performs a task, such as:

  • Collecting log sources
  • Enriching alert data
  • Triggering a QNTRL Circuit
  • Executing scripts
  • Making decisions based on conditions

Each operational state contains:

  • A unique state name
  • The selected action type
  • Input parameters
  • Optional output mappings

3. Termination states

  • End (default end state)
  • Success and Failure states (optional)

Termination states define how the playbook exits and whether subsequent triggers should be initiated.

State categories and their usage

There are three categories of states available:

  • Flow Control states
  • Functional states
  • Log360 Cloud states

Flow control states

Used to shape the logical flow of execution.

State Use case
Pass Move input to the next state without modification.
Branch Evaluate conditions and direct execution along different paths.
Parallel Run states simultaneously when actions do not depend on each other.
Wait Pause execution for a defined duration before proceeding.
Batch Process groups of items as a set.
Success / Failure Explicitly mark the end of the execution with a status output.

Functional states

Used to embed operational logic.

Action Purpose
Function Executes user-defined code using supported languages.
Circuit Invokes another QNTRL Circuit, allowing reuse of logic and modular design.

Log360 Cloud states

Provide direct interaction with Log360 Cloud modules.

Examples include:

  • Get alerts - fetch platform alerts
  • Get log sources - retrieve available log sources
  • List incidents - obtain incident records to enrich data

The list of available Logs360Cloud actions may evolve. Refer to the Understanding playbook states documentation for the latest action set.

Adding and configuring actions

  1. Choose a category from the right panel.
  2. Select an action from the list.
  3. Select an existing state or drag a new one onto the canvas.
  4. Select the previous and next states after dragging and dropping the new state onto the canvas.
  5. Configure mandatory and optional inputs.
  6. Map output attributes if the next state depends on them.

All state configurations must be saved before testing.

Execution behavior and data context

Execution begins at the Start state and proceeds along defined paths. Data context varies depending on how the playbook was triggered:

Playbook type Data source
Alert-based Uses data from the latest alert generated under the selected alert profile.
Incident-based Uses contextual incident evidence.
Log-based Uses available log fields selected or added during testing.
Detection-based Uses data from the latest detection generated under the selected Security rule.

A playbook can also be nested inside another playbook as a sub-playbook, allowing reuse of common playbooks across response strategies.

Save, validate, and test the playbook

  • Save stores configuration without execution.
  • Save & Execute the playbook immediately using available context data.
  • Operators with the necessary permissions can test and run playbooks from alerts and incidents.

Validation ensures:

  • No disconnected states
  • A reachable end node
  • All required parameters are configured

Playbooks with validation failures cannot be saved.

Best practices

  • Use Branch and Parallel judiciously to avoid unnecessary complexity.
  • Reuse sub-playbooks for common tasks such as IP enrichment, user validation, or isolation requests.
  • Always validate before saving to confirm no orphan states exist.
  • Keep termination states meaningful. Avoid ambiguous outcomes.
