Unable to complete on-demand tasks: "Agent version is not compatible"
Problem
You are trying to complete the following on-demand tasks:
- Scanning for patches
- Scanning for inventory
- Establishing remote control
- Shutting down computers remotely
- Moving agents from one remote office to another
However, you encounter an error - "Agent version is not compatible".
This issue can also appear in the following ways:
- "Agent Version is incompatible." in the Remarks column of the scan results
- "Agent upgrade failed: Unable to run post-installation commands. Contact support." in the Remarks column in Agent -> Computers
- "Agent failed to fetch Notification server details from the central server" in the Agent Troubleshooting Tool
- A manually installed computer that does not appear in the console
Cause
When you try to take control of a remote computer or when you scan for patch or inventory manually, you get an error as "Agent version is not compatible". Endpoint Central tries to upgrade the agent automatically, however it fails due to one of the following reasons:
- Communication between the Endpoint Central server and the Distribution server has failed
- Agent binaries might be corrupted.
- The agent was installed using an older agent installer and is on an older version than the Endpoint Central server. Such an agent does not upgrade automatically.
- The computer was offline when the automatic upgrade was attempted.
- The agent cannot communicate with the Distribution server to download the files required for the upgrade. The upgrade completes automatically once the agent can communicate with the Distribution server.
Resolution
- Check whether the agent on the computer is older than the latest agent version. In the Endpoint Central web console, compare the agent version of the computer under Agent -> Computers with the Latest Version shown under Agent -> Summary -> Agent Version. If the agent is older, uninstall it from the computer, restart the computer, download the latest agent from Agent -> Computers -> Download Agent, and install it. An installer downloaded earlier may be of an older version, so use the agent downloaded from the console. If the agent cannot be uninstalled, see Uninstall Agent using Cleanup Tool.
- Verify connectivity between Endpoint Central server and the Distribution server, you can verify this from Endpoint Central web console -> SoM -> Remote Office -> DS Replication Interval. You can identify if the Distribution server is in contact with the Endpoint Central.
- Ensure DS has replicated after applying the new version.
- Ensure Endpoint Central server and the Distribution server S folder is excluded from AV.
- Agent Binaries might be incomplete, retry to configure agent settings/retry agent generation SoM Settings-> Agent Settings->Save Changes.
- From the computer where Endpoint Central agent is installed, try to verify the connectivity to reach the Endpoint Central server by, pinging the Endpoint Central server.
- If you still find the problem persists, contact Support with Server & Agent logs
