Mail trace in Exchange Online

Message trace in Microsoft 365 allows organizations to track email messages as they move through the system, helping to identify whether they were received, rejected, deferred, or delivered. This is essential for troubleshooting mail flow issues, responding to user queries, and validating policy changes. In the Exchange admin center, administrators can access the message trace feature to review emails sent to, sent out of, or sent within the organization, with the ability to trace messages up to 180 days old.

Trace mails in Exchange Online using M365 Security Plus

ManageEngine M365 Security Plus, a comprehensive tool used for monitoring, auditing, and creating alerts for critical activities in your Microsoft 365 environments, can also be used to generate Microsoft 365 email trace reports on your messages in Exchange Online.

1. Log in to M365 Security Plus, select the Management & Reporting drop-down, and select Auditing & Monitoring.
2. Navigate to Audits > Exchange Online > Mail Trace and select which mail trace status for which you'd like to view the audit report. The available options are:
• All Mail Trace
• Delivered Mails
• Failed Mails
• Pending Mails
• Expanded Mail Trace
