Phone number is not detected

Problem

You are unable to view the phone number of a device from the MDM server and see the error message "Phone number is not detected".

Cause

You will get this error message due to the following reasons:

  1. No SIM card is installed in device
  2. Phone number status in the device is 'Unknown'

Resolution 

No SIM card is installed in device

Ensure that there is a valid SIM card installed on the device. Also, ensure it's not an iPad without a SIM card.

Phone number status in the device is 'Unknown'

For Android devices

Navigate to Settings -> About Phone -> Status on your Android device. Ensure that the status displayed is not Unknown, and your phone number is visible there. Else, MDM cannot fetch the phone number on the device. 

For iOS devices

Navigate to  Settings -> General -> Phone -> My number on your iOS device. Ensure that the status displayed is not Unknown, and your phone number is visible there. Else, MDM cannot fetch the phone number on the device. 

Alternatively, connect the iOS device to iTunes and check the device information displayed. If the Mobile Data Number is displayed as Unknown, MDM cannot fetch the phone number in the device.

Also turn on iMessage on the device by navigating to Settings-> General-> Messages-> iMessage if the phone number is not detected.
