# OpManager Training FAQ's - Monitoring performance of network and server ## FAQ's - **Can OpManager create Business views based on the Layer-2 discovery?** Yes. After Layer 2 discovery completed, open a Layer 2 map from Maps -> Layer 2 Maps. Click on the settings icon and choose the Save as business view option. - **We have added a Linux device with SSH credential and the credential is working but why the interfaces are not discovered?** OpManager monitors interfaces only using the SNMP protocol. Make sure the devices are discovered using SNMP protocol to enable OpManager to monitor its interfaces. - **Can we add custom columns in the Inventory page?** Yes. Click on the table icon near the top right corner and you will be able to add or remove the columns. - **I have added a new device two days ago but the disk forecast report is not showing the data for this device, why?** Disk forecast report will be generated only after accumulating data for a minimum of 15 days. - **Is there a way to add devices on bulk to Maps?** Yes. To add devices in bulk, go to Maps -> Maps and click on the settings icon. Select Import devices and you can import devices in a CSV file (the format of your CSV file should be similar to the sample file provided). - **Will it monitor an exchange/Office 365 hybrid environment?** OpManager can monitor Exchange servers. For Office 365 monitoring, we recommend the APM plugin. https://www.manageengine.com/products/applications_manager/office-365-monitoring.html - **Is file monitoring only available for Windows?** Yes. Since it is limited to WMI, it is available only for Windows. - **Nutanix runs in a CentOS environment, would it be able to monitor that?** We can monitor if it responds to SNMP OID. As per this link: https://portal.nutanix.com/index.html?targetId=Web-Console-Guide-Prism-v50:wc-system-snmp-wc-t.html#/page/docs/details we can configure SNMP and add a few metrics. Please refer to this video and contact support for further assistance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I76WqNfE-Ss - **What is exactly total traffic for an interface? Is it the total traffic from a specific point in time until another point in time?** It is based on the polling interval. If the interface polling interval is 15 minutes, then the last polled value is the traffic between the two consecutive polls. - **How can I know the total amount of traffic through an interface from time 1 to time 2? Is there a report?** You can choose the time period in reports and pull the data based on this. - **Is it possible to make a script run from a specific device instead of the monitoring server, especially for Microsoft Windows devices?** For Windows devices, the script has to be executed locally, but there are workarounds like PsExec (third party) or an option in PowerShell where a block of code can be executed on a remote server. The PsExec or PowerShell script might run locally on a Windows server but can call the remote script or run the block of code on a remote server. https://pitstop.manageengine.com/portal/kb/articles/how-to-run-commands-on-remote-machines-using-pstools - **What should I do when I discover a vCenter and in "virtual details" it shows the ESXi host, but it doesn't start monitoring automatically? DNS records are correct. How can I force start monitoring it? Rediscovering vCenter, deleting and re-adding vCenter doesn't help also.** It will not help if the DNS name is not updated. Deleting and rediscovery will repeat the same behavior. If you update the DNS name, then in the next scheduled discovery of vCenter, it will automatically start monitoring the corrected ESX Server. If correcting the DNS records is not possible, you can force start monitoring by going to the vCenter snapshot page -> Host List Widget. In the Monitoring column, provide the IP and start monitoring. In future releases, DNS name dependency will be removed and monitoring will rely on the Entity Name. - **I have 6 ESX hosts, however one doesn't show up under Virtualization / VMware-Host. How do I add it to that section?** That section only shows the monitored ESX Servers. You can go to the vCenter snapshot page and see the complete list of ESX Servers mapped to that vCenter. - **Why does SNMP write have to be enabled for IPSLA?** OpManager needs to push the IPSLA settings on the network device using SNMP write. - **What permissions are required by the VMware vCenter credentials?** HTTPS credentials for VMware vCenter with ReadOnly permission are enough to monitor vCenter. - **What is the quickest/easiest way to identify which IP or interface a DoS attack is against from my main router, if I am also using your NetFlow product?** In NetFlow, you can see the source IPs in the "Offender" tab under attacks event drill down. Interface details are available under the "Field Details" tab (Unique IN interfaces and Unique OUT interfaces). - **What happens if the OpManager Server hard disk goes full? How can we free space on the server?** NetFlow Analyzer specific disk space usage reduction can be done by setting the proper data retention period under Settings -> NetFlow -> Storage Settings. Data retention for Raw data, Aggregated data, and One Minute data can be configured there. - **If someone DoS attacks me, how can I see the network utilization for example in the last 3 minutes to solve the problem quickly, not in the last 1 hour?** - Note down the Offender IP and interface name from the attacks drill down. - Go to Reports -> Custom Search Reports. - Select that interface and provide the offender IP value for the "Source Address" criteria and select the desired time frame. - Click "Generate report". - If Raw data is enabled, more detailed reports can be seen under Reports -> Forensics Reports. - **What constitutes a license for a monitored device? Physical Server / Virtual Host (Hyper-V)? Virtual Machines?** The license for a monitored Virtual Host or Virtual Machine is the same as a Physical Server. One device equals one license. - **How can we monitor VPN connections in a Cisco ASA and create a view of this?** You can create your own monitors for SNMP-enabled devices. Detailed steps are available here: http://help.opmanager.com/add_custom_monitors_api-v12 - **Can you tell me how to show all my network devices and links in this report when I’m trying to generate WAN Links by Utilization?** This is based on interfaces defined as WAN interfaces in the WANINTFDEFINITIONTYPE database table. This should not be confused with WAN RTT monitors. If the interface types are defined in this table, they will be considered WAN links. Please contact support for assistance. - **How can we add a real device into a rack?** The real devices are those added into OpManager. You can drag and drop the devices according to their position in your rack along with the floor specifications. - **How can I get a real picture of Cisco UCS and drop it into a rack if I used the Cisco UCS model?** You can add the Cisco UCS by specifying its credentials to display its UCS parameters. However, displaying a real picture of UCS in a rack is not currently supported and would be considered a feature request. - **How to add a CCTV NVR device?** If you have an IP address for the CCTV NVR device with protocols like SNMP or CLI enabled, you can monitor it in OpManager. - **How do I monitor devices based on time, such as working hours?** You can use the Downtime Scheduler to suppress monitoring during specified time intervals. - **How to add MC and BC traffic counters in the Interface Snapshot?** OpManager monitors IN and OUT traffic available from the device. There is no specific classification for multicast or broadcast interfaces. - **Is it possible to get user-defined interface templates for DS1 (E1/T1) or SHDSL interfaces with G826 performance or DSL-specific monitors like Line ATT / SNR?** Currently, OpManager does not support creating user-defined interface templates. - **How can I add my own monitors under the Hardware tab for Fujitsu Server and APC UPS systems?** You can create custom SNMP monitors to track hardware data. - **If I know the OID but not the MIB name, how can I resolve the OID to a MIB file?** For SNMP monitors, the OID is sufficient. There is no need to resolve the MIB file. - **Can you add a branch instead of a device to the Zoho Map?** Currently, branches cannot be added in Zoho Map. This is a feature request, and the option to add Business Views in Google Maps may be introduced in the future. - **How do you delete a wall that was accidentally dropped on a Floor Map?** Double-click on the wall in the Floor Map and delete it. - **What is the advantage of SNMP monitoring on a Windows server compared to WMI monitoring?** With SNMP, you can monitor interfaces and hardware metrics. - **Is this a monitoring software?** Yes, it is used to monitor your complete network. - **If there is an HDD failure, will it send notifications or memory module errors?** Yes, hard disks can be monitored and notifications can be sent. - **I can track or monitor with other software. Why would I choose this software?** OpManager cannot directly monitor other software but offers an add-on called Application Monitor. It also provides many troubleshooting tools. - **Minimum polling time for availability is 1 minute. If a VM reboots within 1 minute, how can we get availability correctly?** If the reboot happens within exactly one minute, it may be missed. However, you can configure event log monitoring for Windows. If monitoring via vCenter/ESXi, VMware events will notify such reboots. - **What is the advantage of monitoring VMware?** By adding the parent vCenter server with credentials, you can monitor the entire VMware environment (ESX hosts, VMs, datastores) and view real-time vMotions and VM events like reboots. - **Will it support Nutanix also?** Yes. It is on the roadmap and development has already started. - **Will it support Oracle VM and Bluecoat?** No, it is not supported. - **Can we monitor internal URLs or only external ones?** Yes, OpManager can monitor both internal and external URLs. - **Is it possible in OpManager to do bandwidth monitoring?** Yes, using interface monitoring. For in-depth bandwidth monitoring, you can use the NetFlow add-on. - **Is URL blocking (content filtering) such as YouTube or Facebook possible using OpManager?** No, this is not currently available. It may be considered in future implementations. - **Can we monitor file or folder deletion inside a folder?** You can monitor file or folder deletion using the Folder Modification option. If a file inside a folder is deleted, a Folder Modification alert will be triggered. There is also an option to monitor sub-folders. Currently, it does not show which user deleted a file but can monitor whether a specified file exists. - **Does OpManager support AIX systems? How can we configure alerts for file or folder changes on it?** Currently, file and folder monitoring is done using WMI and is not supported for AIX. However, device metric monitoring for AIX systems is supported using SNMP or CLI (Telnet or SSH). - **Can WinSSHD block discovery or traffic via the server?** Yes.
