Office 365 Patch Failure

Problem

You are trying to install patches for Office 365 and encounter the following errors :

  • The system cannot find the file specified.
  • Error Code : 17002.
  • Unknown Error Code : -2146994714.
  • Command Execution Failed

Causes

  1. Antivirus software or firewall might be blocking the Office installation.
  2. Internet connection or proxy settings might be preventing the installation of Office.
  3. Pre-existing version of an Office suite is blocking the installation.
  4. Incomplete\partial\failed repair\installation\change\removal of a previous Office suite can prevent from installing a newer version.

Resolution

The following methods will help you tackle the issue:

  1. Prior to following the troubleshooting steps below, make sure that your Proxy settings, Firewall, and Antivirus don't hinder the download and installation of the Office files.
  2. Incase of Download Failure follow the steps below:
    • Go to the Server console and perform Patch Database Sync.
    • Following this, Patch Scan is initiated and the systems in the network are scanned for missing patches.
    • Select the patches that failed and click Download Again button.
    • Redeploy the configuration, once the patches are downloaded.
  3. If this doesn't resolve the issue, then follow the steps given below

  4. Repair the Office app.
  5. Follow the steps below to run the Repair tool

    • Open Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features.
    • Click on the Office product to repair -> Change -> Quick Repair -> Repair.

    If the issue isn't fixed,

    • Select Online Repair -> Repair.
  6. Remove Office
  7. If the issue persists after running the Repair tool, follow these steps

    • Open Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features.
    • Select Office Suite -> Remove.

    Incase the Uninstallation fails, manually uninstall the software suite by using the following methods:

    • Remove the Windows Installer packages.
    • Remove the Office scheduled tasks.
    • Use Task Manager to end the Click-to-Run tasks.
    • Delete the Office program files.
    • Delete the Office Registry sub keys.
    • Delete the Start menu shortcuts.
  8. Download and Install Office.

    Install Office afresh using the following steps.

    • Sign in to your My Accounts page using this link.
    • Select Install -> Run.
