The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-53, otherwise commonly known as The Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) or NIST SP 800-53, is set of guidelines that the federal government of the United States mandates to be followed by all organizations that deal with government information.
In its own words, FISMA/NIST SP 800-53 claims that compliance with the document helps organizations "meet current and future protection needs based on changing threats, vulnerabilities, requirements, and technologies."
