Event ID 4801 – The workstation was unlocked

Description The workstation was unlocked

When a workstation is unlocked, event 4801 is generated. This is preceded by the logging of event 4800, when the workstation was initially locked. If the user uses a screensaver, this event will correspond with the invoking and dismissing of the screensaver.

This log provides the following information:

  • Security ID
  • Account Name
  • Account Domain
  • Logon ID
  • Session ID

Why does event ID 4801 need to be monitored?

  • Primarily being an informational event, we can monitor it to get information on when a machine is unlocked, and which account is used for it
  • To monitor actions of high value accounts
