ManageEngine ADManager Plus is an integrated solution to manage and report on Active Directory, Exchange Server, Office 365, Google Apps, and Skype for Business (Lync). NetIQ Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) is a solution to manage Active Directory, Exchange, and Office 365. It offers several reports as well. This document differentiates ManageEngine ADManager Plus and NetIQ’s Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) in detail.

Web Based Solution: Both ManageEngine ADManager Plus and NetIQ's DRA are web-based and can be accessible from anywhere in the domain. ManageEngine ADManager Plus deploys an intuitive user web interface, the GUI is designed to facilitate easy management and reporting on AD.
Templates and CSV file based Management:
  • These features make it very easy for an administrator or help desk to create users in bulk. One or more templates can be created in ADManager Plus corresponding to user roles and functions. An administrator can allow even technically native users to create accounts in AD by importing the list of users from a CSV file. Using the templates, standard (or common) attribute values can be predefined so that while creating the users, just a few attributes need to be entered.
  • NetIQ's DRA requires complete information from the database during user creation.

OU Based Management and Delegation: ADManager Plus allows an administrator to delegate roles to help desk technicians to manage a particular organizational unit. The delegation can be restricted to a single OU or one or more OUs. OU based delegation is possible with NetIQ's Directory and Resource Administrator as well.
Group, Computer, GPO, and Contact Management:
  • ManageEngine ADManager Plus facilitates management of groups, contacts, GPOs, and computers in Active Directory comprehensively. It allows modifying properties for these AD objects and also their creation and management.
  • NetIQ's DRA offers group, contact, and computer management features, but not GPO management features.
Reporting:
  • Both ManageEngine ADManager Plus & NetIQ's DRA include reporting capabilities. ADManager Plus has a comprehensive list of over 150 predefined reports whereas NetIQ's DRA offers 60 reports which are accessible after integrating with NetIQ's Reporting Center
  • ADManager Plus facilitates filtering, sorting, customizing the results and also exporting of the reports to desired formats such as CSV, HTML, PDF, XLSX, CSVDE, etc. NetIQ's DRA can only export the reports to HTML, CSV, and XML.
  • ADManager Plus facilitates scheduling of reports. The reports can be scheduled and emailed to administrators, help desk, auditors, and others. Scheduled notification on password expiry and soon-to-expire passwords to end users is also facilitated by selecting the mail server. We do not have sufficient information on whether this feature is available in NetIQ's DRA.
  • Both solutions will help you meet regulatory compliances such as SOX and HIPAA and also fetch required data from AD.
  • Management from Reports:
    • ManageEngine ADManager Plus assists in generating a comprehensive set of reports from the list of available canned reports. The reports are customizable as desired. Any administrator or delegated help desk technician can perform management actions from these reports. For example, from the locked out users report, the administrator can select desired users and unlock them.
    • NetIQ's DRA does not offer this feature.

    ADManager Plus allows an administrator or a delegated help desk technician to search for users, groups, computers, or objects and modify their properties. Users can be searched for from the reports as well.

    Automation and Workflow:
    • Both ManageEngine ADManager Plus and NetIQ's DRA offer automation and workflow capabilities.
    • ADManager Plus' customizable multi-level review-approval workflow can be used for any AD tasks' execution and also while automating AD tasks. NetIQ DRA's workflow feature can only be used for automated tasks and it appears that it can't be used for AD tasks performed manually. There is limited information on whether NetIQ DRA's workflow is customizable or not.
    Management of other platforms besides Active Directory:

    ADManager Plus allows an administrator or a delegated help desk technician to search for users, groups, computers, or objects and modify their properties. Users can be searched for from the reports as well.

    Scalability:

    ADManager Plus and NetIQ's DRA are both scalable to suit any enterprise, and comprehensive reports on AD objects can be extracted with ease.

    Single Installation:

    ManageEngine ADManager Plus is a web based solution and requires only a single installation, help desks access the application from anywhere in the domain using a web browser. The installation procedure is very simple and follows a single click process. NetIQ DRA requires multiple installations for the administrator and clients.

    • NetIQ’s Directory and Resource Administrator and ManageEngine ADManager Plus share similar set of management and reporting features. A comparative study on the two products shows that both the products serve the basic need of Active Directory management and reporting (extracting data from the Active Directory and displaying them in easily understandable format, facilitating easy creation, modification of objects in the Active Directory).
    • ManageEngine ADManager Plus includes Active Directory management, help desk delegation, Active Directory reporting and an AD Search feature as single comprehensive software. NetIQ does not have the facility to perform an AD Search, which is mostly used as a people search portal in enterprise environments.
    • ManageEngine ADManager Plus is easy to set up, install, and deploy, and requires only a single installation. NetIQ’s DRA requires multiple installations.
    • The reporting feature in ADManager Plus is comprehensive and is designed in a way that easy management actions can be done from these extracted reports. NetIQ’s DRA offers limited reports. Management from reports is not possible using NetIQ’s DRA.
    • ManageEngine ADManager Plus offers management and reporting features for AD, Exchange, Office 365, Google Apps, and Skype for Business. Whereas NetIQ’s DRA offers AD and Office 365 management predominantly. For Exchange management, it seems that NetIQ’s DRA needs to be integrated with NetIQ’s Exchange Administrator. Support for Skype for Business (Lync) and Google Apps is not available in NetIQ’s DRA.
