Software Deployment failure - Unknown Error Code: 61684


You are trying to deploy Internet Explorer 8. However the software installation fails with an error message - "Failed with an unknown error: 61684".


You will encounter this error if the prerequisites for IE 8 installation are not met. IE 8 installation includes the installation of some additional required components and prerequisites, based on the target operating system. For additional information, refer to the following URL: .


To eliminate this error, we recommend you to download the Update for Windows XP (KB946501) on to the network share on your Endpoint Central server machine. Now follow the steps specified below to deploy Internet Explorer 8 on your client computers.

  1. Go to Software Deployment tab and select Add Package.
  2. Choose the MSIEXEC/EXE/ISS/Command option in  the Enter Package Details section.
  3. Choose the HTTP Path (URL) option for the Select Path Type.
  4. Browse and upload the Update for Windows XP (KB946501) in the Add Files to Upload dialog.
  5. Specify the Installation Path as WindowsXP-KB946501-v2-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /passive /norestart.
  6. Click on the Add Package button.
  7. Select the Package you have just added and deploy it on the error occured machines.
  8. Select the reboot option as this patch requires reboot .

You can now proceed with IE 8 installation on the repective client machines.
