A Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) server hosts Windows-based applications or desktops that can be accessed by a remote user over a network connection. Sometimes, this remote desktop gets disconnected.
To troubleshoot 'Remote desktop disconnected' errors it is important to look into all possible reasons. The following could be some reasons why your RDS client may fail to connect with the RDS server.
- Limited remote desktop session or Remote Desktop Services session connections: By default, the number of sessions allowed to connect to the server is unlimited. Sometimes, the RD session disconnected error can be caused due to misconfiguration of either Group Policy or RDP-TCP properties in Remote Desktop Services Configuration, which could limit the number of sessions allowed.
- Port assignment conflict: The default port assigned to RDP is 3389. If this port is assigned to some other application on the RDP server, then it can cause "Remote desktop disconnected" error.
- Incorrectly configured authentication and encryption settings: This can also cause:
- RDS client unable to connect using RDP
- RDP session not being disconnected even though the client is physically disconnected.
- License certificate corruption: If the license certificate ID is corrupted, then the RDP clients will be unable to connect to the specified machines and get an error message that says the client is disconnected due to security error. This issue can throw up license related events in the logs of the RDS server.
