AWS Reservations Report

The AWS Reservations Report gives a detailed breakdown of your cloud reservation utilization and coverage, improving visibility into your cost optimization efforts. Reservations help reduce cloud costs by committing to long-term usage in exchange for significant discounts.

This report is valuable for organizations with dynamic workloads where resource needs evolve. The report also aids strategic planning by identifying trends-such as consistently low coverage for specific services-guiding future Reserved Instances purchases to maximize savings.

Benefits of AWS Reservations Report

The AWS Reservation Report provides you with the following benefits:

Use case

A cloud cost manager at a mid-sized enterprise notices high on-demand costs in AWS. Using ManageEngine CloudSpend’s AWS Reservations Report, they analyze reservation utilization and uncover a 34% wastage due to underutilized reserved instances. They also identify an 88% uncovered cost where no reservations apply.

Additionally, they track expiring reservations to renew them strategically. This proactive approach results in better cost efficiency, reduces unnecessary spending, and ensures optimal reservation coverage.

AWS Reservations Report dashboard

The Summary page of the AWS Reservations Report provides a high-level overview of your organization's reservations, including utilization and coverage across cloud services. This helps you track reservation efficiency and optimize cost savings effectively.

You can view the following details on the Summary page:

• Purchases (Count): Displays the total number of active reservations.
• Expiring (Count): Shows the number of reservations that are nearing expiration in the next 30 days, enabling you to plan renewals in advance.
• Wastage (%): Indicates the percentage of underutilized reservation discounts, helping you identify unused or inefficiently allocated reservations.
• Uncovered (%): Represents the proportion of usage that is not covered by reservations, helping you determine if additional reservations should be purchased.

The Reservations Summary section provides the following details:

• Name: Lists the reserved service types.
• Count: Displays the number of active reservations per service.
• Expiring (Count): Shows the number of reservations nearing expiration for each service.
• Utilization (%): Indicates how effectively the reserved instances are being used.
• Coverage (%): Represents the percentage of total usage covered by reservations, helping you determine if they need to adjust their reservation strategy.

Active Purchases

The Active Purchases page helps you efficiently manage their reserved instances by providing a clear overview of active reservations, their validity, purchased account name, and offering types. With visibility into start and end dates with time, you can proactively plan for renewals and avoid unexpected service gaps. The differentiation between standard and convertible reservations empowers businesses to make informed decisions based on flexibility needs.

Additionally, features like scheduled reports and sharing options enhance collaboration and continuous monitoring, ensuring that reservation strategies align with evolving cloud usage patterns.

Cost Utilization Analysis

The Cost Utilization Analysis section helps you optimize cloud spending by providing clear insights into reserved instance utilization. By tracking reservation usage over time, you can ensure that Reserved Instances (RIs) are being fully utilized, reducing unnecessary on-demand costs.

The report enables proactive planning by displaying reservation expiry dates, enabling you to make timely renewal decisions. With customizable analysis options, you can view data in percentage or normalized units across different timeframes (daily, monthly, quarterly, or yearly). This visibility helps cloud cost managers adjust reservation purchases based on actual usage patterns, ensuring maximum savings, efficient resource allocation, and better financial forecasting.

Cost Coverage Analysis

The Cost Coverage Analysis page helps you optimize their reservation strategy by providing a clear view of coverage trends. By analyzing the covered vs. uncovered hours, organizations can determine whether they need to increase reservations to reduce on-demand costs. In the case of Convertible Reserved Instances, organizations can modify instance types for better utilization and to plan future purchases accordingly.

The graphical representation makes it easy to spot trends and anomalies, ensuring you take proactive measures to minimize cloud expenses and maximize reservation benefits. The ability to schedule reports ensures regular tracking, improving long-term cost efficiency.

You can toggle between viewing data in Percentage (%) or Hours (hrs) to gain different perspectives. Also, data can be visualized Daily, Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly for trend analysis.

In addition to the graphical view, you can also view the below details:

• Resource Type: Lists various reserved instances.
• Covered Hours (hrs): Shows the total hours where reservations were utilized.
• Uncovered Hours (hrs): Displays the number of hours that were not covered by reservations.
• Total Hours (hrs): The sum of covered and uncovered hours.
• Covered Percent (%): Indicates the percentage of total usage that was covered by reservations

We cannot manually reallocate. In some RIs known as Convertible Reserved Instances, we can change from one type to another, or we can mention that it helps in planning accordingly for future purchases.

Viewing the AWS Reservations Report

To access the AWS Reservation Report:

1. Log in to CloudSpend and navigate to Reports.
2. Select AWS Reservations Report.
3. On the Summarypage, select the desired account from the drop-down list at the top.
4. Click the desired cloud service from the Reservation Summary section to view the Active Purchases page. To view the Cost Coverage Analysispage, click the desired value from the Coverage % column.
5. In the Active Purchases page, click the desired Subscription ID to view the Cost Utilization Analysis page.
