How to install Patch Manager Plus at AWS?

For those who wish to ease their server management using Amazon EC2 instance, can now install Patch Manager Plus at your instance and manage your desktops with ease.

Pre-requisites

Before installing Patch Manager Plus at AWS, ensure that you meet the following pre-requisites

  1. Say if you are planning to manage upto 1000 computers using Patch Manager Plus, we recommend you to have the following instance configuration
  • EC2 instance type m4.xlarge or above
  • OS - Windows server 2008 or above
  • 60 GB memory space

       Note: You may have to change the configurations according to the number of computers you are managing. To know more about creating instance click here or refer to this presentation

        2. Ensure that the instance's Public IP/DNS is not blocked by any firewall and is accessible to all client computers.

        3. Ensure that all the domains in this list are accessible from the Server as these are the domains from which the patches are downloaded.

        4. Open the ports of Patch Manager Plus at Amazon security groups for smooth communication between the Patch Manager Plus server and the client computers

Steps

After purchasing your instance from Amazon web service, you can install Patch Manager Plus at your instance by following the steps given below:

  1. Remotely connect to your EC2 instance
  2. In that instance, open your web browser
  3. Download and install Patch Manager Plus.

You have now successfully installed the Patch Manager Plus server. To proceed further you have to install Patch Manager Plus agent on the computers you want to manage. You can install agent using any of the below ways

  1. Install agents manually
  2. Install agents using Windows GPO
  3. Install agents from Patch Manager Plus console

Note: When you access the Patch Manager Plus using the public IP/DNS address, note that the "Public IP/DNS address" changes when the instance is stopped/terminated. As Patch Manager Plus works on an agent-server model, it is recommended to use an Elastic IP address for uninterrupted communication between the server and the client computers.
