Java Update Failure
Problem
You are trying to deploy Java updates but the deployment fails with the error message "Fatal Error" or the installation status remains successful, but the Java application seems to be broken.
Cause
You might face any of the above mentioned scenarios due to one of the following:
- Users are logged in and have a Java application open on their computer.
- The Java Quick Starter application (jqs.exe) is running
Note: If the installation of the updates fails it will remove the old version of the product.
Resolution
It is preferable to install Java updates while no users are logged in, no Java based application is running and while Java Quick Starter application (jqs.exe) is not running. You can follow the best practices mentioned below to increase the success ratio while deploying Java updates.
Best Practices:
- It is recommended to deploy the Java updates during the system start up while no user is logged on.
- It is recommended to schedule the Java updates while no Java application is running.
- It is recommended to use Software Deployment with 'RUN AS' option enabled so that no other configuration is deployed at the same time. This would increase the success rate of deploying Java updates.
Note: It is also recommended to install Flash player updates during the system start up. Flash update fails if any of the application that uses flash player is running while the deployment is in progress. So ensure that all the web browsers are closed before installing flash player updates.
