Software Deployment failure - The handle is invalid

Problem

You are unable to perform software installation and you get an error message -"The handle is invalid" during the process.

Cause

The Endpoint Central Application will throw "The handle is invalid" error during Software Installation due to one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Installation arguments may be incorrect.
  2. The working directory does not have access permissions for Everyone Group.
  3. Invalid working directory is specified.

Resolution

Verify the Installation Arguments

Copy the installation arguments and manually execute them in any of the client machines. Check that the installation happens without requiring user interventions. In case of any pop-up during the installation, ensure you are using the correct silent installation arguments of the software you are trying to deploy.
Refer to our Software Deployment Guide for more details.

Make the Working Directory Accessible

For a problem-free software deployment, the Endpoint Central agents residing in the client machines should be able to reach the root path or the working directory that has the software executable. Authenticated Users and Everyone group should possess READ & EXECUTE permissions to this Working Directory. This video will explain the process in detail.

Specify a valid Working Directory

The working directory you specify for Software Deployment should not contain the executable file path, instead should limit to the folder containing the executable. You can verify the root path or working directory from the following location:
Software Deployment --> Add Package --> Advanced Options --> Installer/Uninstaller Settings (enable) --> EXE/MSI Root Path

\\server-name\software-folder - Correct

\\server-name\software-folder\filename.exe - Incorrect

\\server-name\software-folder\filename.msi - Incorrect

If problem persists, contact support with the following details:

  1. Log files from Endpoint Central Server
  2. Log files from Endpoint Central Agent pertaining to the computer where installation has failed.
  3. The Software Package that you were trying to install.

Applies to:Software Installation, Software Installation failure, Remote Software Distribution, Incorrect Root Path
