Basic v/s Standard Monitors of Applications Manager

An Overview

In ManageEngine Applications Manager, monitors are segmented into Basic and Standard categories based on their monitoring depth and capabilities. The Heartbeat Monitor is the sole Basic monitor—designed for lightweight, periodic availability checks to verify uptime through simple heartbeat signals. All other monitor types are classified as Standard Monitors, offering comprehensive performance tracking, detailed metrics, and advanced visibility across servers, databases, cloud services, applications, and network components. This categorization ensures clear differentiation between minimal availability monitoring and more feature‑rich monitoring options suitable for critical infrastructure environments.

License Calculation

The license calculation for various monitors is performed as below:

  • Standard monitors: For Standard monitors, which includes all monitors of Applications Manager other than the Heartbeat monitor, 1 Standard monitor will be counted as 1 Licensed monitor. (in 1:1 ratio)
      For eg:
    • 5 Rest API monitor = 5 Licensed Monitors
    • 30 Url Monitor = 30 Licensed Monitors
  • Heartbeat monitors: For licensing purpose, 1 to 25 Heartbeat monitors will be counted as 1 Licensed monitor.
    • For Professional Edition monitors, the number of Heartbeat monitors are calculated as :
Licensed Heartbeat Monitors = Number of Heartbeat Monitors ÷ 25
    • Heartbeat Monitors are grouped in sets of 25, with each set counting as one licensed monitor. They are licensed at 25:1 ratio. For example, if your license capacity is 50 monitors, you are allowed up to 1,250 Heartbeat Monitors (i.e. 50 x 25 = 1250) — giving you the benefit of monitoring a large number of endpoints while consuming fewer licenses.

    • For Enterprise Edition monitors, the number of Heartbeat monitors are calculated as:
      • Central Server : Licensed Heartbeat Monitors = Sum of (Number of Heartbeat Monitors ÷ 25) of every probe
      • Probe Server : Licensed Heartbeat Monitors = Number of Heartbeat Monitors ÷ 25
    • In an Enterprise setup, each probe groups it's Heartbeat Monitors in sets of 25 to calculate the licensed Heartbeat Monitors in that probe. The Central server then adds up the licensed count from all probes to determine the total count. This allows efficient use of licenses while monitoring many endpoints across all the probes.

The following table shows few similar scenarios:
No. of Heart Beat Monitors(HBM) Licensed Monitors
    2 HBM 1 Licensed Monitor
    24 HBM 1 Licensed Monitor
    25 HBM 1 Licensed Monitor
    26 HBM 2 Licensed Monitors
    50 HBM 2 Licensed Monitors
Note: The change affects only the monitor count used for licensing purposes, with the pricing remaining the same.
