# Remote Desktop Connection - Remote Control Feature | ManageEngine Endpoint Central ## Connection between Viewer and Agent in Remote Control This document explains the differences in the mode of connection between the agent and viewer in Remote Control. ### Connection Between Viewer and Agent via Gateway The remote communication between the agent and the Remote Control viewer happens via the gateway port (default port: 8443) as shown in the diagram below. In this case, all communication between the viewer and agents takes place through the gateway port. ![Lync](https://www.manageengine.com/products/desktop-central/images/rdx-existing-flow.png) ### Benefits of Gateway Mode - Seamless communication for computers outside the corporate network. - No external firewall configurations required. - Default and stable mode of communication. ### Direct Connection Between Viewer and Agent In a direct connection, the initial handshaking between the agent and viewer happens via the gateway port, and the remaining communication occurs directly as shown in the diagram below. To enable direct connection: - Allow UDP communication in your network for the gateway port (default port: 8443). - Ensure that both agent and viewer machines have UDP communication enabled. - For voice and video calls, the agent and caller communicate using this direct connection. Direct connection is applicable only for **Windows** agents and the **HTML5 viewer**. ![Lync](https://www.manageengine.com/products/desktop-central/images/rdx-direct-flow.png) ### Benefits of Direct Connection - Reduces bandwidth consumption. - Provides lower latency for remote connections. - Reduces CPU and memory usage on the server.
