Security-levels in Internet Explorer security zones

Internet explorer provides a security level slider which you can use to define security boundaries for the four zones. The available security levels are High, Medium-high, Medium, Medium-low and Low. This document will explain the behaviour of each security level.

High

  • Appropriate for sites that might have harmful content
  • Maximum safeguards
  • Less secure features are disabled

Medium-high

  • Appropriate for most websites
  • Prompts before downloading potentially unsafe content
  • Unsigned ActiveX controls will not be downloaded

Medium

  • Prompts before downloading potentially unsafe content
  • Unsigned ActiveX controls will not be downloaded

Medium-low

  • Appropriate for websites on local network (intranet)
  • Most content will be run without prompting you
  • Unsigned ActiveX controls will not be downloaded
  • Same as medium level without prompts

Low

  • Minimal safeguards and warning prompts are provided
  • Most content is downloaded and run without prompts
  • All active content can be run
  • Appropriate for sites that you absolutely trust
