Proactive Battery Management
Battery health is a critical factor influencing user experience, device performance, and hardware longevity—especially in mobile and hybrid workforce environments. Undetected battery degradation can result in unexpected device shutdowns, reduced mobility, increased support tickets, and employee downtime, ultimately impacting productivity and customer experience.
DEX provides a connected set of Battery Health Insights that detect different categories of battery risk and pair each one with a recommended remediation workflow. Instead of reacting to individual tickets, IT teams gain a fleet-wide view of which devices are degrading, which are draining too quickly, which are not being used properly (always plugged in), and which are approaching end-of-life, with the appropriate automated response surfaced alongside each finding.
Battery Replacement Recommendation
The Battery Replacement Recommendation insight proactively identifies devices whose batteries have significantly degraded and are approaching end-of-life. By continuously analyzing multiple battery-related parameters, the insight detects early warning signs of battery failure and automatically recommends replacement actions.
This approach allows IT teams to address battery issues before they disrupt end users, ensuring consistent device performance throughout the hardware lifecycle.
This insight enables IT teams to:
- Proactively detect degraded or failing batteries before they impact users
- Reduce incidents caused by sudden shutdowns, rapid battery drain, and insufficient backup time
- Prioritize devices requiring attention based on health, usage, and risk
- Streamline battery replacement workflows through automated validation, warranty checks, and ITSM ticket creation
- Improve end-user satisfaction by maintaining reliable and predictable device performance
Evaluation Criteria
The Battery Replacement Recommendation is generated based on the following criteria. Thresholds can be configured to align with organizational policies and usage patterns.
- Battery Health (%) - Battery health represents the remaining charge capacity compared to the original design capacity. Values below the threshold indicate significant wear and reduced ability to hold a charge. Recommended threshold - 50%.
- Backup Time (Minutes) - Backup time estimates the expected runtime when operating on battery power. Insufficient backup time can limit mobility and disrupt common use cases such as meetings or field work.
- Cycle Count - Cycle count represents the number of complete charge-discharge cycles completed by the battery. Higher cycle counts indicate aging battery chemistry. Many manufacturers classify batteries as near end-of-life once these limits are reached. Cycle count is displayed only if supported by the device firmware and manufacturer drivers. OEM-recommended value - typically between 300 and 500 cycles.
Remediation Workflow
Recommended remediation: Battery Replacement Extension automates the remediation process for devices identified by the Battery Replacement Recommendation insight.
The workflow identifies devices needing battery replacement, validates warranty eligibility, prompts the user for confirmation, and automatically raises an ITSM request.
Low Battery Backup Time
The Low Battery Backup Time insight surfaces devices that deliver poor battery runtime even though battery health is still within an acceptable range. These devices limit user mobility and force users to rely on external power, even though the underlying hardware does not yet require replacement.
In most cases the cause is not the battery itself but a combination of high-power applications, non-optimized power settings, or background services that accelerate drain.
This insight enables IT teams to:
- Detect drain issues early, before they show up as user complaints
- Improve power efficiency by optimizing system and application settings
- Reduce avoidable battery replacements by addressing the real cause of poor runtime
Evaluation Criteria
The Low Battery Backup Time insight is generated if device battery health is greater than 70% and backup time is less than 3 hours.
Remediation Workflow
DEX offers two remediations for this insight, which can be used together:
- Battery Saver Workflow: applies optimized power settings to the device after user confirmation.
- Battery Power Efficiency Guidance: educates the user on power-efficient habits through an Engage campaign.
Battery Wear Increasing
The Battery Wear Increasing insight identifies devices whose battery health is still acceptable but whose cycle count is rising, indicating that the battery is aging faster than expected and is on a trajectory toward replacement.
Identifying this trend early lets IT teams intervene with configuration and behavior changes that slow further wear, before the device drops into the Battery Replacement Recommendation list.
Evaluation Criteria
The Battery Wear Increasing insight is generated if device battery health is greater than 70% and cycle count is greater than 300.
Remediation Workflow
Recommended remediation: Battery Saver Workflow, which applies optimized power settings to extend remaining battery life.
Continuous AC Power with Low Battery Usage
The Continuous AC Power with Low Battery Usage insight identifies devices that are almost always plugged into AC power, with very little time spent running on battery. Sustained 100% charge with continuous AC connection is a known accelerator of long-term battery wear, and devices in this pattern often develop reduced backup time over time even though they appear healthy day-to-day.
Evaluation Criteria
The Continuous AC Power with Low Battery Usage insight is generated when the device has been continuously plugged in for more than 3 days, on-battery usage time is less than 2 days, and backup time is less than 3 hours.
Remediation Workflow
DEX offers two remediations for this insight, which can be used together:
- Battery Saver Workflow: applies optimized power settings to slow further wear.
- Battery Power Efficiency Guidance: nudges users toward healthier charging habits.
Remediation Workflows
Each insight points to one or more of the following remediation workflows. The workflows are shared across insights.
Battery Replacement Extension
The Battery Replacement Extension automates the remediation process for devices identified by the Battery Replacement Recommendation insight.
Using telemetry collected from managed endpoints, the workflow:
- Identifies devices that require battery replacement.
- Validates device eligibility based on warranty status.
- Prompts the end user for confirmation.
- Automatically creates an ITSM request for battery replacement.
This automated workflow reduces manual intervention, accelerates resolution times, and ensures consistent handling of battery replacement cases.
Battery Saver Workflow
Non-optimized battery settings are a common, fixable cause of poor runtime and accelerated wear. The Battery Saver Workflow applies optimized power settings to the device based on a configuration the admin defines, delivered to the user through an Engage prompt for confirmation.
Supported power settings include:
- Display settings: enable Dark Mode, disable screen saver, reduce brightness, shorten display sleep timeout.
- USB settings: stop USB devices when the screen is off.
- Energy Saver: enable Energy Saver mode.
Because the workflow is delivered via Engage and applied only after user confirmation, the user retains control over settings on their own device while IT establishes a healthier default.
Battery Power Efficiency Guidance
Different roles use their devices differently, so a single power policy across the organization is rarely the right answer. The Battery Power Efficiency Guidance extension delivers an Engage campaign that educates users on power-efficient habits relevant to how they actually use their device.
Guidance topics include:
- Avoiding sustained 100% charge for desk-based use.
- Identifying and closing high-power background applications.
This is a soft intervention.More details on guidance is available in this document.
Threshold Configuration
Thresholds for the above metrics can be customized in Settings > Insights path. Refer Insights documentation for step-by-step configuration instructions.
