MessageTrace Deprecation

Legacy message trace deprecated: Update to Exchange Reporter Plus build 5726

As of Sept. 1, 2025, Microsoft began deprecating the Get-MessageTrace and Get-MessageTraceDetail cmdlets for tenants in the Microsoft 365 global cloud and has replaced it with the Get-MessageTraceV2 and Get-MesageTraceDetailV2 cmdlets.

This article will explore the implications of this change and what you can do to ensure uninterrupted access to the Exchange Reporter Plus reports that used to rely on this cmdlet.

Impact on Exchange Reporter Plus

Exchange Reporter Plus was using the Get-MessageTrace and Get-MessageTraceDetail cmdlets for certain audits and report actions.

The affected reports and audit actions will be migrated to the Get-MessageTraceV2 cmdlet in the Exchange Reporter Plus build 5726, except for the following reports, which will no longer be available in Exchange Reporter Plus:

  1. Emails to Invalid Address
  2. Failed Emails due to Size
  3. Mail Activity by Connector
Module Category Report
Audit Mail Trace All Mail Trace
Delivered Mails
Expanded MailTrace
Failed Mails
Pending Mails
Report Compliance Reports Mails Received by Shared Mailbox
Mails Sent by Shared Mailbox
Mail Traffic Reports Delivered vs Undelivered
Distribution List Mail Summary
Email Activity By Group
Email Activity by User
Undelivered Emails
User To User Email Activity
Mailbox Reports Mail-Enabled Security Groups Messages
Other Exchange Reports Distribution List Message by Subject
Inactive DL by Last Mail Activity
Inactive DL by Last Received Mail
Inactive DL by Last Sent Mail
Inactive Shared Mailboxes by Last Received Mail

What you need to do

If you use any of the affected reports, you should update your Exchange Reporter Plus instance to the build 5726 to ensure uninterrupted access.

Apart from this, no other action is required from your end for a seamless Exchange reporting experience. All other Exchange Reporter Plus functions remain unaffected.
