A User Principal Name (UPN) is made up of two parts, the prefix (user account name) and the suffix (DNS domain name). For example:
user1@sampledomain.com
In the above example, prefix is user1 and suffix is sampledomain.com.
Types of UPN changes
You can change a UPN by changing the prefix, suffix, or both:
- Changing the prefix. In case, a person's name is changed, you would have to change their account name as well.
Example: user1@sampledomain.com could be changed to user2@sampledomain.com.
- Changing the suffix. For example, if a person changes their division, you might want to change their domain as well:
user1@sampledomain.com could be changed to user1@sampledomainaustralia.com.
OneDrive URL:
A user's OneDrive URL is based on their UPN:
https://sampledomain-my.sharepoint.com/personal/user1_sampledomain_com
where user1_sampledomain_com corresponds with user1@sampledomain.com.
In this case, if you change the prefix to user2 and the suffix to sampledomainaustralia, then the user's OneDrive URL would change to:
After you change a UPN, any saved links to the user's OneDrive (such as desktop shortcuts or browser favorites) will no longer work and will need to be updated.
