Setting up default storage space for your OneDrive users will prevent unnecessary consumption of storage space. This eases administrative burden, as the users themselves would weed out redundant, unnecessary files when their storage spaces reach the maximum capacity.
You can set up default storage for your users either through OneDrive admin center or via PowerShell.
Follow the steps given below to set up storage space using OneDrive admin center:
- Sign into OneDrive admin center as a global admin or SharePoint admin.
- Select Storage in the left pane.
- In the Default storage box, enter the default storage amount in GB.
- Click Save.
Steps to set up default storage space using PowerShell:
- Download the latest SharePoint Online Management Shell.
- Connect to SharePoint as a global admin or SharePoint admin in Microsoft 365.
- Run the following command:
Set-SPOTenant -OneDriveStorageQuota <quota>
Where <quota> is the storage value in megabytes. For example, 1048576 for 1 TB. If you specify a value greater than what is allowed for a given user's license, the value will be rounded down to the maximum value allowed for their license.
Note: To set up default storage space for a particular user, run the following command:
Set-SPOSite -Identity <user's OneDrive URL> -StorageQuotaReset
