The OneDrive sync app checks for updates every 24 hours. If it has been stopped for more than 24 hours, it checks for updates as soon as it is started. Here's what it does to check if an update is available:
- It checks if the latest version available is higher than the current version installed on the computer. If the current version is too old, then it updates to the minimum version required to install the latest version.
- Updates will be available to the computer based on the roll out percentage set by Microsoft.
Once this is done, OneDrive downloads the latest version to a hidden folder. It doesn't require human intervention. After the download is complete, OneDrive verifies and installs it. In case, OneDrive is running at the time, it is stopped and restarted.
