Electronic discovery in Microsoft Teams
Electronic discovery or eDiscovery as it is commonly called, helps identify, store and retrieve electronic information that can be used as evidence in legal cases. Not all Teams content are covered under eDiscovery. Private chats and group chats in Teams are recorded and saved in the respective users' mailboxes. All standard channel messages are recorded and saved in the group mailbox representing the team. Files uploaded in standard channels are taken care by eDiscovery for SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.Content such as audio recordings, code snippets, reactions and name of channels cannot be eDiscovered. eDiscovering private channel files: Messages sent in a private channel are recorded and saved in the mailbox of all private channel members, rather than in a group mailbox. Every private channel has its own SharePoint site collection which is separate from the parent team site. Hence, the files in a private channel are managed independently of the parent team. For Microsoft Teams eDiscovery cannot be used for a single channel within a team; the whole team must be searched.
