Microsoft Teams, the interactive collaboration platform from Microsoft, supports the following three identity models.
Cloud Identity
In this model, the user is created and managed in Microsoft 365. User data is stored in Azure Active Directory and the login credentials are verified by Azure Active Directory.
Synchronized Identity
In this model, the user is created and managed in an on-premises Active Directory server. The username and password hash are synchronized to the cloud via the Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect tool. Therefore, the user credentials are the same in the on-premises server and on cloud. The password entered on cloud is verified by Azure Active Directory.
Federated Identity
In this model, the user password of the synchronized identity is verified against the on-premises Active Directory using the Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS). The password hash is not synchronized to the cloud.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) offers an additional layer of security for user accounts during sign-in. In Microsoft 365 MFA, users are required to confirm their identity using a second authentication factor, after entering the correct account credentials. This second authentication factor could be a phone call, text message, or an app code. For a hybrid setup using ADFS, in addition to the Microsoft 365 MFA options, users can also authenticate using a physical or virtual smart card.
