Legal hold in Microsoft Teams
Legal holds are useful to preserve information in case of an upcoming litigation. This can be applied to data in Microsoft Teams such as private chats, channel conversations, etc. You can select specific users or even put an entire team on hold. When an entire team is put on hold, all the messages that were exchanged in that team, including private channels can be discovered by the organization’s admins or compliance managers.
To put a user or a team on legal hold using the Security & Compliance center:
- Navigate to eDiscovery or Advanced eDiscovery and click on + Create a case.
- Open the created case, select Holds and click on + Create to create a hold. When creating a new case, you can choose to place mailboxes or sites on hold.
- Add a unique Name and Description for the hold.
- Under Choose location select a user or an entire Team to be put on hold.
- Select Create Query and customize the hold with more granularity.
- Review your settings before publishing it to your organization.
