A brief look at monitoring claim types

Objective: Monitor changes to claim types associated with Dynamic Access Control while using advanced security auditing options.

To set up auditing, ensure that Dynamic Access Control, including central access policies, claims, and other components have been configured and deployed in the network.

Step 1: Configure settings to monitor changes to claim types

  • After signing in to your domain controller, using appropriate administrator credentials, go to Server Manager >Tools >Group Policy Management.Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) opens up.
  • Right-click the Group Policy Object from the console tree and then select Edit.
  • Double-click Computer Configuration> Security Settings. Then expand Advanced Audit Policy Configuration>System Audit Policies>DS Access. Double-click Audit directory service changes.
  • Select the Configure the following audit events check box, select the Success Failure check box. Click OK.

Step 2: Verify that events related to changes to claim types are generated.

  • Open the Active Directory Administrative Center and choose Dynamic Access Control. Right-click Claim Types, select Properties.
  • Click the Security tab> Advanced. This opens the Advanced Security Settings dialog box. Click the Auditing tab.
  • Select Add to add a security auditing setting for the specific container, and then close all the Security properties dialog boxes.
  • In the Claim Types container, select Add a new claim type or an existing claim type. In the Tasks pane, click Properties, and then alter an attribute of your choice.
  • Click OK, and close the Active Directory Administrative Center.
  • Go to the Event Viewer >Windows Logs> the Security log.
  • An Event 5137 should be generated. You can find important information about what attributes were altered for a claim type in the description box.
