Sending unencrypted passwords to third-party SMB servers.

The Server Message Block (SMB) protocol is a network sharing protocol that enables print and file sharing and other networking operations like remote Windows administration.

Description

Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers is a security policy setting that determines whether SMB redirector can send plain-text passwords to third-party server services that do not support password encryption during authentication.

The possible values for this policy setting are:

  • Enabled - The Server Message Block (SMB) redirector is allowed to send unencrypted passwords to a non-Microsoft server that doesn't support encryption during authentication.
  • Disabled - The Server Message Block (SMB) redirector is allowed to send only encrypted passwords to third-party SMB servers. If password encryption is not supported by those servers, the authentication request will fail.
  • Not defined.

This security policy setting can be accessed at Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.
