Amazon Simple Email Service - Overview

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) is a cloud-based email sending service designed to help developers and businesses send marketing, notification, and transactional emails securely and at scale. It offers high deliverability, flexible configuration, and detailed analytics for email performance.

Applications Manager monitors Amazon SES to provide insights into your email sending activity and performance. It tracks key metrics such as send, delivery, bounce, complaint, and reject rates, helping ensure reliable communication, maintain sender reputation, and optimize email throughput.

Monitored Parameters

Go to the Monitors Category View by clicking the Monitors tab. Click on the Simple Email Service (SES) instance available under Amazon in the Cloud Apps section. Displayed below is the Amazon Simple Email Service bulk configuration view distributed into three tabs:

  • Availability tab gives the availability history for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • Performance tab gives the health status and events for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • List view tab enables you to perform bulk admin configurations.

By clicking a monitor from the list, you'll be taken to the Amazon Simple Email Service dashboard which includes the following tabs:

Performance Overview

CONFIGURATION
Maximum Emails Send Rate The maximum number of emails that Amazon SES can accept from the user account per second (in emails/s).
Maximum Emails in 24 hours The maximum number of emails that the user is allowed to send in a 24 hour interval.
EMAILS SENT IN LAST 24 HRS
Emails Sent In Last 24 hrs The number of emails sent from your SES account over the past 24 hours. This value is updated periodically and may be subject to slight delays, so real-time accuracy is not guaranteed.
SUCCESSFUL EMAIL PATH
Email Success Rate The percentage of emails that were successfully delivered to recipient mail servers between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Success Rate = (Emails Successfully Delivered ÷ Emails Send Attempts) × 100
Email Open Rate The percentage of successfully delivered emails that were opened by recipients in their mail clients between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Open Rate = (Emails Opened ÷ Emails Successfully Delivered) × 100
Email Click Rate The percentage of successfully delivered emails where recipients clicked on at least one link in the email between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Click Rate = (Emails Clicked ÷ Emails Opened) × 100
UNSUCCESSFUL EMAIL PATH
Email Rejection Rate The percentage of send attempts that were rejected by Amazon SES, due to detected viruses or policy violations, between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Rejection Rate = (Emails Rejected ÷ Emails Send Attempts) × 100
Email Bounce Rate The percentage of emails that permanently failed (hard bounces) or were considered soft bounces after Amazon SES stopped retrying delivery between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Bounce Rate = (Emails Bounced ÷ Emails Send Attempts) × 100
Email Delivery Delay Rate The percentage of emails that experienced delivery delays due to temporary issues with the recipient mail server between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Delivery Delay Rate = (Emails Delayed ÷ Emails Send Attempts) × 100
Email Rendering Failure Rate The the percentage of emails that were not sent due to template rendering issues between the poll interval (in %). This can occur when the email template is missing or mismatched with its parameters.
Formula: Email Rendering Failure Rate = (Emails Rendering Failures ÷ Emails Send Attempts) × 100
RECIPIENT ACTIONS
Email Complaint Rate The percentage of successfully delivered emails that were marked as spam by recipients between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Complaint Rate = (Emails Complained ÷ Emails Successfully Delivered) × 100
Email Unsubscribed Rate The percentage of successfully delivered emails where recipients updated their subscription preferences (via the List-Unsubscribe header or the Unsubscribe link) between the poll interval (in %).
Formula: Email Unsubscribed Rate = (Emails Unsubscribed ÷ Emails Successfully Delivered) × 100

EMAILS SEND ATTEMPTS VS SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERED
Emails Send Attempts Rate The total number of send requests per second successfully accepted by Amazon SES and attempted for delivery to recipient mail servers between the poll interval. If account-level or global suppression is enabled, SES still counts the request as a send, but the delivery is suppressed (in emails/second).
Emails Successfully Delivered Rate The total number of emails successfully delivered to recipient mail servers per second between the poll interval (in emails/second).
EMAILS SEND ATTEMPTS
Emails Send Attempts The total number of send requests successfully accepted by Amazon SES and attempted for delivery to recipient mail servers between the poll interval. If account-level or global suppression is enabled, SES still counts the request as a send, but the delivery is suppressed.
SUCCESSFUL EMAIL PATH
Emails Successfully Delivered The total number of emails that were successfully delivered to recipient mail servers between the poll interval.
Emails Opened The total number of emails that were opened by recipients in their mail clients between the poll interval.
Emails Clicked The total number of times links within emails were clicked by recipients between the poll interval.
UNSUCCESSFUL EMAIL PATH
Emails Rejected The total number of emails that Amazon SES accepted but identified as containing a virus, and therefore did not attempt delivery to recipient mail servers between the poll interval.
Emails Bounced The total number of hard bounces where recipient mail servers permanently rejected the email between the poll interval. Soft bounces are counted only after SES stops retrying delivery.
Emails Delayed The total number of emails that could not be delivered to recipient mail servers due to temporary issues between the poll interval. Delivery delays can occur when recipient inboxes are full or when receiving mail servers encounter transient issues.
Emails Rendering Failures The total number of emails that were not sent due to template rendering issues between the poll interval. This typically occurs when template data is missing or mismatched with template parameters and applies only to emails sent using the SendTemplatedEmail or SendBulkTemplatedEmail API operations.
RECIPIENT ACTIONS
Emails Complained The total number of emails successfully delivered to recipient mail servers but marked as spam by recipients between the poll interval.
Emails Unsubscribed The total number of emails successfully delivered where recipients updated their subscription preferences between the poll interval, either by clicking the List-Unsubscribe option in the email header or the Unsubscribe link in the footer.

Recent Suppression List
Email Address The email address that is mentioned on your suppression list for your account.
Suppression Reason Indicates the reason why the email address was added to the suppression list.
Possible values: BOUNCE or COMPLAINT
Last Updated Time The date and time when the suppressed destination was last updated.
