PAM360 Remote Connect
PAM360 Remote Connect is an independent desktop client for Windows that is designed to help you launch direct remote connections via password-less login to Windows and SSH-based target resources without needing to install multiple remote clients or a web browser. To achieve this, Remote Connect utilizes the PAM360 server's API to act as a stand-alone client for remote connections that is independent of the PAM360 web application. PAM360 Remote Connect ensures seamless operation of the authentication and remote access mechanisms for RDP, SSH, and thick-client SQL connections. Essentially, it acts as both the Microsoft Terminal Services Client (MSTSC) and SSH PuTTY client rolled into a single, lightweight application with auditing capabilities.
To learn how to configure the PAM360 Remote Connect application in a user endpoint and attain remote sessions from it, refer to this help documentation.
- By default, PAM360 Remote Connect access is disabled for all users. Administrators can enable Remote Connect access from the Add User or Edit User wizard. The administrators can also allow other users to grant Remote Connect access by enabling the custom user role - Manage Remote Connect for Users for them.
- Administrators can set a time limit for a period of inactivity, after which the application will automatically end all active sessions and log out. Click here to learn how to set the time limit.
- By default, detailed audit trails for all remote sessions taken via PAM360 Remote Connect will be recorded in the Audit section of the PAM360 web interface. Administrators or custom users with the required privileges enabled can view those audit details.
By the end of this document, you will understand the benefits, key features, current limitations, and troubleshooting tips of PAM360 Remote Connect.
- Benefits of Using PAM360 Remote Connect
- PAM360 Remote Connect Features
- Limitations of PAM360 Remote Connect
- Troubleshooting Tips
1. Benefits of Using PAM360 Remote Connect
- PAM360 Remote Connect offers password-less, one-click login for seamless access to remote endpoints.
- Remote Connect is a lightweight client, capable of launching both RDP and SSH-based connections from a single interface—thus eliminating the need to install multiple applications to get the job done.
- Remote Connect can launch concurrent active remote connections in multiple tabs.
- SSH-based remote sessions initiated via Remote Connect are highly customizable. The client allows you to modify system settings within the remote session window and lets you perform operations that you can carry out on a local machine, such as opening the session window in full screen and changing the keyboard configurations. This provision helps elevate the overall user experience.
2. PAM360 Remote Connect Features
- SSH Proxy: PAM360 Remote Connect supports remote access even when direct connectivity between the source machine and target endpoints is unavailable. By configuring an SSH Proxy, users can establish secure remote sessions with just a connection between the source machine and the PAM360 server. This eliminates the need for direct RDP/SSH access from user workstations to endpoints, enhancing flexibility and security. To learn about configuring the SSH Proxy for remote sessions in the PAM360 Remote Connect application, refer to this help documentation.
- Application Credential Injection: PAM360 supports automatic password injection in third-party thick-client applications to establish connections to database servers directly from the PAM360 Remote Connect desktop client. Refer to this help documentation for more information.
3. Limitations of PAM360 Remote Connect Features
- Privileged session recording is not supported for remote connections launched through the PAM360 Remote Connect applications deployed on Windows 10 and earlier versions; session recording is supported only on Windows 11 and later versions. Access the PAM360's web interface to enable session recording for the PAM360 Remote Connect.
- In environments configured with a load balancer, PAM360 remote session recording will not function when the load balancer distributes remote connection traffic across multiple application servers without session persistence.
- Session termination is not supported for remote connections launched via the Remote Connect application. Therefore, once an end-user launches a remote connection via Remote Connect, resource owners cannot terminate the session from the PAM360 web server.
- The advanced connection settings configured for remote connections in the PAM360 web application do not apply to remote connections launched via the Remote Connect application.
- The Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) option is not available in the Remote Connect interface. However, direct file transfer between machines is supported once an RDP or SSH connection is established.
- RemoteApp connections are not supported in the Remote Connect application. If RemoteApp is configured for a resource, users cannot connect to it using the Remote Connect application.
- Launching remote connections using the currently logged-in Active Directory/Microsoft Entra ID/LDAP account credentials is not available.
- The Ctrl+Alt+Del option will not work in an RDP session initiated via the PAM360 Remote Connect application.
- The minimize option displayed on the RDP session console after entering full-screen mode will not function in RDP sessions initiated via the PAM360 Remote Connect application when session recording is disabled. Full-screen mode is not supported when session recording is enabled.
- PAM360 remote connect does not support SSH sessions to devices configured with SSH key-based authentication.
4. Troubleshooting Tips
1. My PAM360 web server is running but I am unable to connect to Remote Connect?
The Remote Connect client only works with PAM360 version 5600 and above, so please ensure that the PAM360 web server is up-to-date. If not, click here to upgrade the web server to the latest version and try connecting to Remote Connect once again.
2. My PAM360 web server is up-to-date but I am still not able to connect to Remote Connect?
It is possible that Remote Connect access is disabled for your user profile. Please contact your administrator. If you are an administrator, refer to this section for steps on how to enable access.
3. When I hover over an account, why do I see the 'Disabled' option instead of 'Connect' or 'Request'?
If you see the Disabled option on an account, it could be due to one of the following reasons:
- Plain text view of passwords is disabled for all resources under General Settings in the PAM360 web server.
- Remote App is configured for the selected account. Remote App does not work in Remote Connect as of now.
- RDP access using local accounts is restricted for the selected resource at resource level.
- Remote connection is disabled for the selected resource type under 'Auto Logon Helper' in the PAM360 web server.
