Oracle Cloud Compute Services Monitoring

As more workloads shift to serverless architectures, teams need clear visibility into how their functions behave at runtime, from how often they're invoked to how fast they execute, to where errors and throttling occur. Without this visibility, diagnosing issues and optimizing serverless workloads becomes guesswork. Oracle Cloud Compute Services provide scalable and flexible compute resources, enabling users to run applications, virtual machines, bare-metal instances, and serverless workloads in the cloud. With Applications Manager, you can ensure that applications and workloads are running efficiently, resources are optimized, and potential issues are identified and resolved promptly, giving you a centralized view of your entire Oracle Cloud Infastructure.

Applications Manager supports monitoring for the following Oracle Cloud Compute services:

Oracle Cloud Application monitoring

Oracle Cloud Application is a logical grouping of Oracle Functions in OCI's serverless compute platform. Each application defines shared runtime settings - including network access, logging, and tracing - that apply uniformly to all functions it contains. Applications Manager's Oracle Cloud Application monitoring provides aggregate visibility into the health and performance of all functions within an application.

With Applications Manager, you can:

  • Track application health and availability by monitoring the Life Cycle State of each Oracle Cloud Application.
  • Get aggregate invocation metrics - Sync, Detached, and Total Invocations - across all functions within the application to understand usage patterns and workload trends.
  • Identify errors and throttling at scale by tracking Success, Error, and Throttled response counts along with their corresponding rates across the entire application.
  • Measure execution performance by monitoring the average Execution Duration across all functions in the application to spot latency trends and underperforming workloads.
  • Manage serverless resource consumption by tracking Allocated Provisioned Concurrency and Allocated Concurrency to optimize cost and capacity planning.

Oracle Cloud Function monitoring

Oracle Cloud Function is an individual serverless compute unit within an Oracle Cloud Application in OCI. Each function is a container-based unit deployed and invoked on demand, with no infrastructure to provision or manage. Applications Manager's Oracle Cloud Function monitoring provides granular visibility into individual function performance, helping you optimize serverless workloads and troubleshoot issues at the function level.

With Applications Manager, you can:

  • Monitor individual function readiness by tracking each function's Life Cycle State and Invoke Endpoint availability.
  • Analyze per-function invocation activity by tracking Sync, Detached, and Total Invocations to identify hotspots, usage patterns, and underperforming functions.
  • Detect and resolve reliability issues by monitoring Success Rate, Error Rate, and Throttle Rate at the function level to quickly pinpoint throttled or error-prone functions.
  • Optimize execution performance by tracking average and maximum Execution Duration to identify slow or timing-out invocations.
  • Control pre-warming costs and latency by monitoring Allocated Provisioned Concurrency and reviewing function configuration details including memory limits, timeout settings, and container image specifications.

Oracle Cloud Instance monitoring

Oracle Cloud Instance is a service that lets you provision and manage virtual machine and bare-metal compute hosts, known as instances. Each instance can be configured with the shape, storage volumes, and network settings needed to match the demands of your workload. Applications Manager's Oracle Cloud Instance monitoring provides deep visibility into instance performance, storage health, and network activity, helping you maintain availability and optimize resource utilization across your compute fleet.

With Applications Manager, you can:

  • Monitor instance health and resource consumption by tracking CPU and Memory Utilization, along with Disk Read/Write throughput and IOPS, to detect performance bottlenecks before they affect running workloads.
  • Track boot volume performance by monitoring read and write throughput and I/O operations to ensure the primary storage volume of each instance remains healthy and responsive.
  • Gain full visibility into attached block volumes by tracking volume lifecycle state, read and write throughput, and I/O operations across all block volumes associated with an instance.
  • Maintain network performance and security by monitoring Virtual Network Interface Cards (VNICs) - track input and output traffic rates, packet volumes, and packets dropped due to security policy violations.
  • Review detailed instance and OS configuration including instance shape, region, availability domain, operating system details, launch mode, and boot volume information.
