Device Templates - Classification, Creation and Modification

This section is common to all the editions of IT360 - Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition (Probes only) and MSP Edition (Probes only).

During initial discovery, IT360 categorizes the network devices into Switches, Routers, Printers, Firewalls, Load Balancers, etc. For proper classification, Install and Start the SNMP agent on all the managed devices.

For effective device monitoring, IT360 provides about 600 device templates, which carry the initial configuration to classify the devices into pre-defined categories, and to associate monitors to them. The device templates allows you to do the following:

There are two ways in which you can create a Device Template:

  1. From Device Templates Wizard

  2. Quick Configuration Wizard

You can also Edit Device Templates.

1. Steps to Create a Device Template from Device Templates Wizard

  1. Login to IT360 console with the Username and Password of an Admin user.

  2. Click the Admin tab in the header pane.

  3. Click Template Library under Discovery.

  4. By default, the Device Templates tab will be selected. In the Device Templates wizard displayed, do the following:

  5. Click New Template to define a template for a new device type.

  1. Configure the following properties:

    1. Device Template: Specify the device type.

    2. Vendor Name: Select the vendor from the available dropdown. Click New to add a new vendor, and Save it.

    3. Category: Select the category for the device type from the available dropdown. On discovery, the devices are automatically placed in the select Category map.

    4. Monitoring Interval: Configure the interval, at which the device needs monitoring.

    5. Device Image: Click on the available image icon or Select button to choose an image for this device type.


    6. Device Identifier: Type the sysOID and click Add. Click Query Device for IT360 to query the device for the OID. You can click the Delete icon to delete the OID.

    1. Add Monitors: Click this button to either choose the existing monitors or add new. To choose existing, select the required checkboxes and click OK. To add new monitors, follow any of the below ways:

    1. Edit Thresholds: Click this option to edit the configured thresholds for proactive monitoring. Configure the Threshold Alert, Threshold Settings, Consecutive Times and Rearm Value. Click on OK.

  1. Click Create button to create the new device template.

Now, the classified devices are placed under different maps, for easy management. For proper device classification, make sure that you have installed and started SNMP in all the network devices, before starting the IT360 service.

You can also add your own infrastructure views. Custom infrastructure views can be added to group devices which cannot be classified under the default views provided. For instance, if you would like to monitor some IP Phones, it will not be appropriate to classify them as Servers or Desktops.

Steps to Edit Device Templates

  1. Login to IT360 console with the Username and Password of an Admin user.

  2. Click the Admin tab in the header pane.

  3. Click Template Library under Discovery.

  4. By default, the Device Templates tab will be selected. In the Device Templates wizard displayed, do the following:

  5. In the Device Templates wizard, click the required template Name link from the available table.

  6. The Modify Device Template wizard is displayed.

  7. Now, follow the same steps and modify the template as required.

  8. Once the changes are done, click Apply.

2. Steps to Create a Device Template from Quick Configuration Wizard

This way of associating is helpful, when you want to add Performance monitors to several devices. For doing so, follow the steps given below:

  1. Login to IT360 console with the Username and Password of an Admin user.

  2. Click the Admin tab in the header pane.

  3. Click Bulk Configuration under Monitoring Configuration.

  4. Choose the Network Devices option. The Quick Configuration Wizard is displayed.

  5. Select the option "Add Performance monitors to several devices(SNMP, WMI and CLI)". Click Next. The Device Templates wizard displayed.

  6. Follow these steps.
