How to enforce lockout policy on Bitlocker enabled computers?
Written by Titus Manohar, IT security team, ManageEngine • Updated on May 2026
Interactive logon: Machine account lockout threshold is a security policy that enforces lockout policies on computers that have Bitlocker, a native encryption feature, enabled to protect data. It applies to all Windows devices starting with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 operating systems.
Description
The Interactive logon: Machine account lockout threshold enables you to specify the number of failed logon attempts following which the device will be locked by Bitlocker. Once the maximum number of failed logon threshold limit is exceeded, the device invalidates the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) protector and any other protector except the 48-digit recovery password, and then reboot. While the devices is in the lockout mode, it only boots into the touch-enabled Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) until the recovery password is entered by an authorized user to restore full access.
The invalid logon attempts threshold can be set between 1 and 999. If the value is set to 0 or not specified, this policy setting will be considered disabled and no action will be performed. If the value is set from 1 to 3, it will be interpreted as 4.
Interactive logon: Machine account lockout threshold security policy setting can be found under Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.
