Amazon Lightsail Database - Overview

Amazon Lightsail Database is a fully managed relational database service offered by AWS Lightsail that provides preconfigured MySQL and PostgreSQL instances at a predictable monthly price. It handles routine database tasks such as hardware provisioning, patching, backups, and maintenance windows, allowing developers to focus on application development rather than database management.

Applications Manager's Amazon Lightsail Database monitoring tool provides real-time visibility into critical performance metrics, including CPU utilization, active database connections, disk queue depth, free storage space, and network throughput. With proactive alerting, historical performance trend analysis, and detailed configuration tracking, administrators can quickly detect bottlenecks, monitor storage consumption, and ensure consistent database availability.

Monitored Parameters

Go to the Monitors Category View by clicking the Monitors tab. Click on the Lightsail Database instance available under Amazon in the Cloud Apps section. Displayed below is the Amazon Lightsail Database bulk configuration view, distributed into three tabs:

  • Availability tab gives the availability history for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • Performance tab gives the health status and events for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • List view tab enables you to perform bulk admin configurations.

By clicking a monitor from the list, you'll be taken to the Amazon Lightsail Database dashboard,d which includes the following tabs:

Performance Overview

STATUS INFORMATION
Database StateThe current operational state of the Lightsail-managed database at the time of polling.
Database EngineThe database engine software (e.g., MySQL).
Endpoint AddressThe endpoint address for connecting to the database.
Endpoint PortThe port number for the database endpoint.
CPU UTILIZATION
CPU UtilizationThe average CPU utilization of the database instance at the time of polling (in %).
DATABASE CONNECTIONS
Database ConnectionsThe average number of active database connections at the time of polling.
DISK QUEUE DEPTH
Disk Queue DepthThe average number of outstanding read or write IOPS waiting to access the storage volume between poll intervals.
FREE STORAGE SPACE
Free Storage SpaceThe average amount of available storage space remaining on the database disk volume at the time of polling (in GB).
NETWORK RECEIVE THROUGHPUT
Network Receive ThroughputThe average rate of incoming network traffic received by the database instance between poll intervals (in MB/s).
NETWORK TRANSMIT THROUGHPUT
Network Transmit ThroughputThe average rate of outgoing network traffic sent by the database instance between poll intervals (in MB/s).

Creation TimeThe date and time when the operation was created.
Operation TypeThe type of operation performed on the database.
Operation StatusThe current status of the operation.
Possible values: Succeeded, Failed, NotStarted, Started, Waiting, Pending, or Running.
Status Changed TimeThe date and time when the operation status was last changed.

Creation TimeThe date and time the managed database was created.
Database EngineThe database engine used by the managed database (e.g., MySQL).
Engine VersionThe version of the database engine.
Master UsernameThe name of the master user for the managed database.
Master Database NameThe name of the default database for the managed database instance.
Blueprint IDThe ID of the database blueprint used to create the managed database.
Bundle IDThe bundle ID used to create the managed database, which defines its compute, storage, and memory capacity.
HARDWARE & NETWORK CONFIGURATION
Number of CPUsThe number of vCPUs allocated to the managed database instance.
Disk SizeThe size of the disk attached to the managed database instance (in GB).
RAM SizeThe amount of RAM allocated to the managed database instance (in GB).
Availability ZoneThe AWS Availability Zone where the managed database is located.
Secondary Availability ZoneThe Availability Zone for the secondary (standby) database instance, if high availability is enabled.
Publicly AccessibleIndicates whether the managed database is publicly accessible.
Possible values: Yes or No.
Parameter Apply StatusThe status of parameter updates applied to the managed database.
BACKUP & MAINTENANCE CONFIGURATION
Preferred Backup WindowThe daily time range during which automated backups are created for the managed database.
Latest Restorable TimeThe latest point in time to which the managed database can be restored.
Preferred Maintenance WindowThe weekly time range during which system maintenance can occur on the managed database.
Backup Retention PeriodIndicates whether backup retention is enabled or disabled for the managed database.
