Amazon SQS - Overview

Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) is distributed message queuing service introduced by Amazon in 2004. SQS lets us to integrate and decouple distributed software systems and components. It offers to send, receive and delete messages programmatically via web service applications. Unlike other message queuing services, it is serverless.

Monitored Parameters

Go to the Monitors Category View by clicking the Monitors tab. Click on the SQS instance available under Amazon in the Cloud Apps section. Displayed is the Amazon SQS bulk configuration view distributed into three tabs:

  • Availability tab gives the availability history for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • Performance tab gives the health status and events for the past 24 hours or 30 days.
  • List view tab enables you to perform bulk admin configurations.

By clicking a monitor from the list, you'll be taken to the AWS SQS dashboard. It has 2 tabs:

ParameterDescription
PERFORMANCE RATE
Arrival RateThe rate at which the messages arrive in the queue per minute (in messages/min).
Completion RateThe rate at which the messages are processed and deleted in the queue per minute (in messages/min).
BREAKDOWN OF STANDARD/FIFO MESSAGES
Visible MessagesNumber of messages that are available for retrieval.
Not Visible MessagesNumber of messages that are not available for retrieval.
Delayed MessagesNumber of messages that are in delayed state. (Applicable only for Standard queue)
PROCESSED MESSAGES
Messages ReceivedNumber of messages returned by requests to the ReceiveMessage API action.
Empty ReceivesNumber of ReceiveMessage API calls that did not yield a message.
AGE OF OLDEST MESSAGE
Age of Oldest MessageMeasures the approximate age of the oldest non-deleted message (in hrs).
SIZE OF SENT MESSAGES
Sent Message SizeMeasures the size of the messages added to the queue (in KB).
Rate of Sent Message SizeMeasures the rate of size of the messages added to the queue (in KB/sec).

FIFO/STANDARD QUEUE DETAILS
Queue URLShows the URL of the Amazon SQS queue.
Created TimeDisplays the time when the queue was first created.
Last Modified TimeDisplays the time when the queue was last modified.
Region NameShows the region where the queue was created.
Queue TypeShows the type of queue. (Standard/FIFO)
Content-based DeduplicationShows whether the content based deduplication is enabled for the queue. (Applicable only for FIFO queue)
STANDARD/FIFO QUEUE CONFIGURATIONS
Delayed TimeAmount of time for which the message will be in delayed state (in seconds). (Applicable only for Standard queue)
Received Message Wait TimeThe time a ReceiveMessage API action waits for the message to arrive (in seconds).
Maximum Message SizeThe maximum limit of size a message can contain before Amazon SQS rejects it.
Message Retention PeriodTime for which Amazon SQS retains a message (in hours).
Visibility TimeoutTime during which Amazon SQS prevents other consumers from receiving and processing the message (in seconds).
Dead Letter Target ARNARN of the Dead letter queue where Amazon SQS moves the message after maximum receives value is exceeded.
Maximum ReceivesMaximum number of times a message is delivered to the queue before being moved to a dead letter queue.
Customer Master KeyID of the AWS managed Customer master key (CMK) for the Amazon queue.
Key Reuse PeriodTime for which a data key can be reused to encrypt or decrypt messages (in seconds).
