How to add Active Directory objects to groups using ADManager Plus

Objective:To add Active Directory (AD) objects to group(s) using ADManager Plus

Solution:

Using ADManager Plus, you can easily add AD objects to just one group, or multiple groups at once, either in single or in bulk using a CSV file.

Rules for creating a CSV file required for adding objects to groups:

  1. The first row of the CSV file must contain the LDAP names of the AD attributes whose values you wish to configure. To view a complete list of all the LDAP attributes that can be specified in a CSV file, click here.
  2. Each successive row is an object record that contains the values for the respective LDAP attributes.
  3. In the CSV file, specify the name of the group to which the object has to be added, and the DistinguishedName of the object to be added (under the 'member' LDAP attribute).

Steps for adding objects to a specific group using ADManager Plus:

  1. Logon to ADManager Plus and navigate to the Management tab.
  2. Click the Group Management section in the left navigation page, and click on Modify Single Group.
  3. Search for the desired group and click on Modify Group.
  4. In the Modify Group Properties window that pops up, click on the Group tab.
    1. You can click on the Edit icon beside the Members field, specify the desired Domain name, and select the required members.
    2. You can also click on the CSV icon, and import a CSV file containing the objects' details, to add them to that group.
  5. Click OK and click Update Group.

Steps for adding many objects to multiple groups using ADManager Plus:

  1. Logon to ADManager Plus and navigate to the Management tab.
  2. Click the Group Management section in the left navigation page, and click on Modify Bulk Groups.
  3. Click on Import and specify the CSV file that contains the object and group details.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click on the Change Headers option to edit the LDAP names of the objects' attributes.
  6. Select the objects you wish to add to the group.
  7. Click on Update in AD.
  8. In the Select Attributes window that pops up, select member attribute as the attribute that you wish to update.
  9. In the same window, click on More and select name as the attribute using which the objects must be located in AD.
  10. Configure Advanced Options such as clearing the existing value of the attribute in AD, if its value in the CSV is empty, and more.
  11. Click on OK.
