How to automatically cleanup (delete) the expired user accounts in Active Directory?

Objective: To automate the process of cleaning up the expired user accounts from Active Directory.

Solution: Use ADManager Plus' built-in AD automator to delete all the expired user accounts from AD, automatically and periodically, at the specified intervals.

Using ADManager Plus' automation module to auto-clean expired user accounts

  1. Click the Automation tab.
  2. Click the Automation link from the ones available on the left hand side. You will now be able to view the list of all automated tasks.
    Note: Automation Policy will help you to automate a series of tasks that must be executed in a specific order at specific time intervals.
  3. Click the Create New Automation link located at the top right corner of the page.
  4. In Create New Automation page,
    • Enter an appropriate name and description for the automation being created.
    • In Automation Category, select User Automation.
    • Select the domain in which you auto-delete the expired user accounts. If you wish to perform this action in only specific OUs, use the Add OUs link and select the necessary OUs.
    • In Automation Task/Policy, under Select Task, select the Delete Users option. Note: If you wish to control the execution of this task, that is, if you wish this task to be initiated but give you an opportunity to take a look at the user accounts that will be deleted and then give the go ahead, select the Implement Business Workflow option,
    • In Select Objects, you can specify the user accounts that have to be deleted, in two ways.
    • From Report: Click the Select link located beside From Report field, select the Account Expired Users report, from the reports list. Use the Refine Result option if you wish to delete only those accounts that satisfy a specific condition. For example you can clean up the expired user accounts from only a specific department or OU.
    • CSV file: If you wish to specify the list of users to be deleted via a CSV file, click the Select More link, and specify the location of CSV file.
    • In Execution Time, use the options provided (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) to specify the time and the frequency at which the expired user accounts must be deleted from AD.
    • Hit Save, to save this automation. If you wish to save the automation and also run it once immediately, hit the Save & Run button.
