How to disable the unused Group Policy Objects (GPO)?

Objective: To identify all the GPOs not being used and disable them.

Solution: This involves two steps:

  1. Use the Unused GPOs report in ADManager Plus to identify the GPOs not in use.
  2. Use ADManager Plus bulk GPO management capability to disable all the unused GPOs in the domain, at once.

Identifying unused GPOs

  1. Click the AD Reports tab.
  2. Go to GPO Reports, and click the Unused GPOs report.
  3. In the Unused GPOs report page, select the domains in which you wish to identify the GPOs not in use.
  4. Click Generate to generate the report.
  5. Export the report in the desired format using the Export As option located just above the report.

Disabling all unused GPOs, at once, in bulk.

  1. Click the AD Mgmt tab.
  2. Go to GPO Management. Click the GPO Management link.
  3. From the list of domains displayed on the LHS, locate and click the necessary domain. This will display all the GPOs in the domain and also their status.
  4. Open the Unused GPOs report that you exported, and locate all the GPOs mentioned in the report, in the GPOs list displayed and select them.
  5. Click the Disable button located just above the list of GPOs, and based on your need, choose user configuration settings only, computer configuration settings only, or both.
