How to migrate groups using ADManager Plus

Mergers, acquisitions, or even technological upgrades often require organizations to migrate their Active Directory (AD) objects, like users and groups, with minimal disruption. It's essential to ensure the seamless transfer of these groups along with their memberships and permissions between domains within a trusted forest. ADManager Plus allows you to easily migrate AD groups between domains.

Steps to migrate AD groups using ADManager Plus:

  1. Log in to ADManager Plus and navigate to Management > Migration > Group Migration.

  2. Under Source Settings, select the Source Domain from which you would like to migrate the groups.
  3. Choose the groups you want to migrate from the Select groups option.
  4. Under Target Settings, select the Target Domain and the Target OU.
  5. Under OU Option, choose one of the following options:
    • Migrate objects directly to the selected Target OU as a flat list: This option migrates the group exactly as-is into the chosen target OU.
    • Migrate objects along with their OU hierarchy to the selected Target OU: This option migrates the group along with its source OU to the target domain.
  6. Under Conflict Handling, choose a conflict handling option to avoid duplication during migration:
    • Apply this naming format: Select a naming format from the drop-down to apply during group migration. Click Advanced Settings to set the application order.
    • Automatically append number from: This option lets you append or increment the suffix of a conflicting group attribute value. If you choose append, use Advanced Settings to define the suffix length and characters to fill any gap.
    • Do not migrate if a conflict is detected: Choose this option if you want to avoid migrating duplicate groups.
  7. Check the Migrate using ADMT check box to migrate groups using the native Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT). Learn more about ADMT installation. Uncheck this option if you would prefer to migrate using ADManager Plus.
  8. Now, under Group Options, select the following options as required:
    • Migrate group SIDs to target domain: This option is enabled by default and cannot be edited, ensuring that the SID history of the selected groups is migrated from the source to the target domain.
    • Update user rights: Select this option to update user rights in the target domain.
    • Fix membership of the group: This option is enabled by default and cannot be edited, ensuring migrated groups are added to the same groups in the target domain as they were in the source domain.
    • Copy group members: Select this option to copy the groups and their members from the source domain to the target domain.
    • Update previously migrated objects: This option associates group memberships for groups already migrated.
  9. Click Preview to review and edit conflicts, selected users, and associated accounts. Use Review to see the final migration list.
  10. Select Migrate Now to migrate the selected groups.
